Friday Date Night: Cineplex Digital Film Fest

A different kind of night at the movies

With Valentine's day coming up, I suspect there are a lot of mums and dads out there scrambling to try and find a sitter, reservations and all the other stuff. But why not do something a little different—maybe go for dinner and a movie before V-Day and avoid all the cheesy, expensive crap? I have always thought that a pre or post V-Day was the way to go if you really wanted to get out on the town because I don't particularly find overcrowded, overanxious, and overpriced to be all that romantic.

Recently, when I was told about Cineplex Odeon Canada's Digital Film Festival, I thought it was a great way to be able to go out on a date with my hubs, avoid all the crazy, and see a movie we wouldn't necessarily get a chance to see otherwise.

Cineplex's digital film fest works like this: the programming team selects a number of either never-before-seen on the big screen or never-before-released in digital films (second run classics) and show them in various theatres across Canada. These are movies that could appeal to any one of us and are awesome date night movies like Jaws or A Clockwork Orange. Movies that some of us may have never had the chance to see on the big screen, or have been digitally remastered for the newer film projectors.

This year's roster of films has something for everyone. Even if you didn't want to go for a date, you could take the kids to see any of the Indiana Jones movies (they are ALL screening back to back this Saturday, February 2!) or Gremlins! GREMLINS! I saw that when I was a wee tyke. I had a chance to speak with Cineplex's Director of Communications, Mike Langdon, and he was very excited about the fest. He told me that the fest has grown from a few theatres to the 19 they are showing on this week and they hope to grow it even more. Tickets for these movies are $6 (1989 prices!) and you get your regular Scene points (100 points per ticket purchased).

If you're into something new that you may not have seen before, I can't recommend Battle Royale or Old Boy enough. Japanese dystopian future (the ORIGINAL Hunger Games) or Korean revenge flick. These are two of my all time favourite movies and since Matt's seen neither, I'm trying to talk him into going to one of these. But, you can always do some good old gangster flicks or classic Tarantino. Just so much awesome to choose from, you could, in theory, go to the movies every night.

The Digital Film Fest runs Friday, February 1 - Thursday, February 7 and plays at various theatres across Canada. For show times and a complete listing, you can check out www.cineplex.com/digitalfilmfest.

So, spill it! What classic would you like to see on the big screen?
