My Daytime Talk Show Hosting Adventures

Look Ma! I'm On TV!

My Daytime Talk Show Hosting Adventures

A few days ago while on Facebook I saw some pictures posted on our local Daytime Ottawa talk show page. Daytime Ottawa is hosted by the awesome duo of TL Rader and Derick Fage and the pictures were of various guest hosts who had filled in. As soon as I saw them I immediately emailed the show producer Erin Lannan and offered my services should they ever need a future guest host.

Well just this past week I get a dm on twitter from Erin asking if I would be available to guest host the following day, and without even knowing if I have a babysitter or not, of course I said yes! This was kind of a big deal for me given that my dream job is either hosting my own show or being a correspondent on Entertainment Tonight Canada, so of course there was no way I was giving up this opportunity! And I’ve been on Daytime enough times to know that it’s a totally fun show and the hosts are incredibly nice so I was really looking forward to it.

So after I secure someone to take care of my kids (thanks to my brother in-law for becoming a teacher thus ensuring his summer days are free to rescue me when I need an emergency sitter) and to my sister for coming over to help me sort through the piles of black tank tops that I own to pick just the right one for the show, I was ready!

Daytime host Derick Fage was amazing and made sure that I didn’t fall on my face during the show. It amazes me how easy he makes it look, so I just tried to follow his lead and not embarrass myself. And how lucky was I that the 1 show I guest host on we had 3 kitchen segments - so not only do I get to co-host the show but I also got to drink wine and eat! This is the best job ever!

A big thank you to the crew at Rogers Daytime Ottawa for bearing with me and being so nice to me and also to Erin Lannan and Derick Fage for making sure I didn’t look silly! I was only sad that I didn’t get to see the always lovely TL Rader but I’m hoping that Erin will one day let me guest host with her so that we can do an all Royals/Fashion/Fascinator show. Oh the fun!

The 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Nominations Announced

Did Your Faves Get Nominated?

The 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Nominations Announced

This morning, the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced and some of my most favourite programs are nominated for multiple awards. My new HBO obsession Game of Thrones was nominated for 13 Emmy’s including a Best Actor nod for the awesome Peter Dinklage and Best Drama Series.

Speaking of Best Drama Series, there’s some stiff competition in that category with all 6 nominated series being deserving contenders. I still think I would put money on either Game of Thrones or Boardwalk Empire to take home the trophy, although with Friday Night Lights no longer being on the air, it might pull in the nostalgia vote. I was going to say sympathy vote but that wouldn’t be accurate since everything I’ve read about FNL has been stellar.

The HBO mini-series Mildred Pierce topped the list of most nods with 21, while Mad Men brought in a solid 19 nominations. Someone tell me again why I haven’t seen either? Boardwalk Empire brought in 18 noms and Modern Family 17 making me happy that I watch – and love – both series’. Last year’s Emmy darling Glee also scored a very respectable 12 nominations. And as much as I love me some Glee and Modern Family I will be firmly rooting for Big Bang Theory to take home the Best Comedy Series award, because that series makes me laugh out loud every single time.

So excited to see Johnny Galecki nominated alongside fellow Big Bang Theory actor Jim Parsons for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, but I was really happy to see Friends alum Matt LeBlanc recognized for his work on his series Episodes. If you didn’t catch the first season of Episodes on HBO do yourself a favour and see it – one of the best new shows of last season IMO. And if I haven’t convinced you to get HBO yet (I’m talking to you Lisa) I don’t know what more I can say, other than the new season of Dexter starts September 26!

The Emmy Awards will air on September 18 and will be hosting by Glee’s own Jane Lynch. Not sure what I think of this host choice just yet, but I have a feeling it will be just ‘meh’ as much as I love me some Sue Sylvester.

Here’s a listing of the nominations in the main categories. You can check out a complete list here. So – are your faves nominated? Any snubs that you can see?

Voices Behind The Movie

The Celebs of Space Chimps

Voices Behind The Movie

Do you ever sit down to watch one of your kids’ animated movies and play that game where you try to figure out who’s voicing each character? You know it’s someone famous but you just can’t quite put your finger on it? And when you just can’t take it anymore, you reach for your laptop and hit IMDB.com to figure out whose voice you’ve been listening to before it drives you crazy? I do.

All. The. Time.

While some of the bigger ticket animated movies publicize their famous cast as much as their movie, thus guaranteeing box office success, some movies make a quieter impact at the box office even though they have just as much star power. Movies like Kung Fu Panda, Tangled and Cars even have huge Hollywood premieres for their movies, drawing fans and celebrities alike. Space Chimps was first released in theatres in July of 2008, and although it has a stellar cast of voice talent, it didn’t make a huge impact. This might have had something to do with another animated family movie being released just a month prior, called Kung Fu Panda. That is some unlucky timing.

But while Space Chimps might have had a fraction of the box office success that Kung Fu Panda did, it had just as much star power in the voice department. Space Chimps features the talents of SNL star Andy Samberg, Glee’s Jane Lynch, Patrick Warburton (who will forever be Seinfeld’s Puddy to me), Broadway star Kristin Chenowith, and movie actors Jeff Daniels and Stanley Tucci, to name a few. It’s the story of the ‘descendants of the first chimps in space as they blast off for fun and adventure on a far-away planet.’ Roger Ebert even gave the film 3 stars and said that "Space Chimps is delightful from beginning to end." How can you not trust Roger Ebert?! And how much more fun can you get than chimps in space?!

So while you may have seen Kung Fu Panda or Cars a hundred times already, it might be nice to settle in and watch a movie that you might not have had the pleasure of seeing already. I haven’t seen this one yet but I have a feeling it will be a big hit with my kids, especially if Andy Samberg is half as funny as he is on Saturday Night Live. So when you tune in on Saturday during TELETOON’s Big Ticket Movie at 7pm to watch Space Chimps with the kids, try this - see how many voices you match to the characters before you have to start googling!  Hours of fun for the whole family!
