It was the biggest Life Class audience for Oprah yet and it was here in Toronto. Over 8,500 women of all ages, shapes and colours waited in line for hours to be part of the audience for Oprah's travelling Life Class television series on the OWN Network. And me. Joining Oprah onstage was her spiritual swat team: Bishop Jackes, Iyanla Vanzant, Deepak Chopra, and Tony Robbins. The room was electric with passion—it was like a revival meeting to pray at the alter of Oprah. I have to admit, I felt a little disconnected.
YMC's reach just got a little bigger! We're thrilled to announce that as of today, Metro readers across Canada will be privy to a fresh and fabulous family life section powered by the YMC Team!
I dedicate this post to all of you who choose your battles wisely when it comes to your kids eating well.
I'm not a morning person. I like to sleep in, start slow, drink my coffee and ease into the day. A parental reality check makes this scenario impossible. Instead, it's a race to get the kids up, dressed, fed, organized and out the door on time. What makes matters worse, no matter how grumpy I am in the morning, I am extremely aware of how important a healthy breakfast is for my family.
How appropriate is the Hunger Games movie for kids? Is there too much onscreen violence for tweens? Parents want to know!
Having a tween with a voracious appetite for reading is useful when the Hunger Game books he's devouring happen to be the hottest topic in pop culture. My son read all three books in the Hunger Games series, and then read them all again to relive the story from beginning to end. He's been counting the days till it hits the big screen, and has begged us to see the film this opening weekend.
My son is eleven years old, so I figured it was time for him to start learning a career. So rather than sending him to some camp to fool around, he spent five days at Pawsitively Pets Kids Camp, which puts kids who love animals to work and trains potential junior zookeepers. And if the life of caring for exotic animals doesn't pan out, he can always try his hand as a journalist.
Yesterday I decided to bite the bullet and have a booth at The Original Baby Soiree. If you have ever tried to promote your business at a trade show, you understand that to say it's hard work is an understatement. The days are long, there is a ton of standing, you usually lose your voice from all the chatting—plus it's a day away from your family.
For the third year my family and a group of other YMC staff, members and their families met in Ottawa for a long weekend of Winterlude fun. It turned out, due to surprisingly warm weather, this year it was all about food and less about outdoor activities for the Ehm clan - which suited us just fine.
I'm sitting at the bar of the ski hill while my kids are in their snowboarding lessons. I'm doing carpool for my daughter's ballet class. I'm waiting for my son to finish Kung Fu. Sitting, waiting, driving. I'm sendentary while making sure my kids are active.
It started when Aunt Flow came to town. Then I was visited by a lady in a flowing red dress. I was riding a huge crimson wave. The problem was that Aunt Flow didn't leave (if you get my drift) and I ended up fainting in the middle of the night and being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance!
I knew it was "time" when my husband casually mentioned that I "may" want to visit the hairdresser. Every 2.5 months I get that rather unflattering skunk-like growth around my part that screams "Dye me!" What it's also whispering is "Time is passing," "You're starting to look your age" and "It's not time to go natural."
So, the new YMC site has been live for a week now. Fingers crossed that you're having a blast bouncing around discovering new blogs, articles, tips, tv and contests we've been working so hard on for you! All of the amazing YMC staffers who worked tirelessly for the last year to put this together for you are getting to know their families again, making appointments to colour their hair and other assorted important tasks we've all had to put on hold.
Almost a year ago we sent out a survey inviting YMC readers to dish on the good, bad, and the ugly on our site. We were inundated with brutally honest feedback on what you loved and loathed about YMC. What followed was some serious brainstorming, lots of coffee, meetings, and a plan!
When I used to work at MuchMusic, we were a tight little team. Most of us were fresh out of school - naive, passionate and driven. We spent hours creating leading edge television which resonated with a whole generation of music lovers. Some of us left early on, others jumped midstream and there are still a couple who are still there.
For five years I've been on the receiving end of packages showing up at my front door with products PR companies want me to review. Occasionally some of these parcels are filled with products I need, which is always fun. Once PR reps from Olay saw me tweeting about moisturizer and sent me a few relevant products which I used and reviewed.

What do the holidays mean to you? Unfortunately, one of the first things that comes to my mind is wasting hard earned cash in the over-consumption of cheap plastic stuff you don't need. It seems like there is so much pressure to give gifts, we end up buying "something good enough" just so you can cross names off your list.
You never know when you're going to meet someone interesting. The other night, I found myself chatting with Michael Fazio, a New Yorker famous for servicing the stars.
