Reality TV Round-Up

Two New Slice Network Shows Premiering Tonight

Reality TV Round-Up

Recently I was sent the screeners for two new shows that are going to be airing on Slice starting tonight. The first was a reality show called Brides of Beverly Hills and the second was Tori & Dean sTORIbook Weddings. I thought I would give ‘Brides’ a shot because I’m all about reality shows, and I also have a pretty big distaste for Tori Spelling ever since she trashed Dean McDermott’s ex-wife at the MMVA’s a few years ago so I really had no intention of watching her show.

The first thing I thought of when I turned on Brides of Beverly Hills was how much it was basically Say Yes to the Dress just in a different bridal salon. Instead of Kleinfelds, brides shop at upscale Beverly Hills wedding boutique Renee Strauss, where the owner, Renee herself is on hand to oversee all appointments. The biggest difference that I noticed wasn’t that the brides had a bigger budget or chose more elaborate dresses – it was the plastic surgery! Honestly – it was like watching one boob job and botched botox job after another. I have no idea how these young girls can look at themselves in the mirror and think they look ok. I was so distracted by one bridesmaid, who was a blatant Paris Hilton wannabe (can you imagine) and who could barely speak properly due to the insane amount of collagen in her lips, that it was hard to pay attention to the dresses that her equally over-botox’d friend was trying on.

Needless to say the show was ok, but it wouldn’t make it on my pvr list.  For a show that was supposed to be about brides who could afford the cream of the crop, it felt a little budget to me.

Then, because I didn’t want to watch the people of Vancouver destroy their city, I kept watching the Tori & Dean show. Surprisingly, I kinda liked it. Tori & Dean play wedding planner to a couple who want to have a pug themed wedding, and because Tori loves pugs she really wanted to plan it. The couple getting married were very likeable and down to earth and Tori and Dean both seemed to genuinely get along with them. Tori was even pretty likeable and not at all over the top, and seemed like she really was into all this wedding planning business.   It did interest me though that the bride and groom got to choose from designer gowns, designer wedding bands and very upscale venue’s for their wedding making me wonder who the heck was paying for it all. The only part that I found a little gross was when Tori took the groom shopping for a gift for his bride to be – at a lingerie store. No thanks.

So if you want to check either of these shows out, they premiere tonight on Slice starting with Brides of Beverly Hills at 9:30pm est. followed by was Tori & Dean sTORIbook Weddings at 10 pm EST. If you watch them make sure you let me know what you think!

The Goonies

Where are they now?

The Goonies

SCROLL DOWN TO JOIN MY LIVE GOONIES CHAT ON FRIDAY JUNE 17 @ 8:30 PM!

There’s something really great about sitting down and watching a movie with your kids, but there’s something magical about watching a movie with them that you enjoyed when you were a kid.  It’s like getting to relive a little bit of your youth through your own child’s eyes.  It’s remembering how you felt watching as your children are experiencing the same emotions.  There are a few movies that I remember vividly watching when I was younger.  Stand By Me was one, Gremlins another, ET, and The Goonies.  Who doesn’t remember secretly wanting to find their own treasure map after watching that group of kids experience the adventure of a lifetime?

The Goonies was one of the first movies that I saw, before my introduction to John Hughes movies, that not only got me interested in the story but in the people who starred in the movie.  I remember watching the movie and wanting to be Kerri Greene, and thinking that Josh Brolin was super cute, but so was Sean Astin, and if I had to choose it would totally be Josh because he was just so cool!

As the years passed I watched some of the actors go on to star in other movies, but for some of them they kind of fell off the map.  Then I found out The Goonies is airing on Friday on TELETOON Retro and started reminiscing about it.  I wondered what happened to all of the stars of that movie.  So, I decided to find out.  If you ever wondered ‘where are they now’ about the cast of The Goonies, look no further!

The Goonies: Then and Now

Sean Astin
Sean played the role of Mikey Walsh in the movie, and was only 14 when The Goonies was released.  Although not really a household name, Sean has been in some hugely successful films.   He had roles in The War of The Roses, Toy Soldiers, Encino Man, Rudy, and of course as Sam Gamgee in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.  What you might not know is that Sean is also a voice over artist and you’ve probably been listening to him on your television without even knowing it.  Sean has voiced characters in Higglytown Heroes and is the title voice in Special Agent Oso.

Josh Brolin
Josh was super hunky Brand Walsh (seriously – now I realize that he and Jason Priestley shared a screen name!), Mikey’s jock older brother.  And he was super cute in the movie!  Josh had a relatively decent career, filming a lot of television series and TV movies for a decade after The Goonies hit the theatres.  But it was his role as Llewellyn Moss in No Country For Old Men that made Josh a sought after Hollywood actor again.  The actor earned rave reviews for his portrayal of a hunter who discovers a huge sum of cash amid a pile of dead bodies in the Academy Award winning film.  After No Country came roles in Milk, W, American Gangster, and True Grit to name a few.  Josh is currently filming Men in Black III with Will Smith.  And he’s still super hot!

Jeff Cohen
Jeff Cohen played the loveable Chunk in The Goonies.  Although I couldn’t remember seeing him onscreen in anything lately I didn’t realize that he had retired from acting.  According to IMDB Jeff’s last television role was in 1991. Currently Jeff is an entertainment lawyer and the founding partner of Cohen & Gardner LLP.  An interesting fact though, right before Jeff was to report to set for filming of The Goonies he contracted the chicken pox.  He was afraid that if he told the filmmakers about it they would recast, so he didn’t tell and showed up for work anyway.  They say that you can actually see the chicken pox on his chest in the movie in certain scenes.

Corey Feldman
Corey played Mouth in the movie and was the quintessential child star.  He went on to become something of a tween sensation, starring in such iconic 80’s movies as Stand by Me and The Lost Boys.  Corey also starred in a number of teen movies with Corey Haim causing them to be dubbed ‘The Two Corey’s’.  Corey starred in a season of the reality show The Surreal Life and even went on to star in his own reality show with Corey Haim in an attempt to revive both of their stalled careers.  That didn’t work so well.  Feldman also fronts his own band and is still trying to reclaim some of his teen idol glory.

Kerri Green
Kerri Green played Andy Carmichael and was one of the first girls on screen that I sort of worshipped.  She came along around the same time as Molly Ringwald and was that girl that young girls watched and idolized. I’m pretty sure I wanted to be Kerri for a long time after I saw this movie.  After The Goonies, Kerri went on to star in movies Summer Rental and Lucas (another great movie) and a few random television shows, but has mostly been inactive on screen.  Kerri did co-found a movie production company, Independent Women Artists, and still writes screenplays.

Martha Plimpton
I really love Martha Plimpton so I’m so happy that I get to watch her on TV every week on her new series Raising Hope.  If you don’t watch it you should because it is incredibly funny!  Martha starred as Stef Steinbrenner in The Goonies and has had an impressive movie career ever since.  The daughter of actor Keith Carradine, Martha went on to star in acclaimed movies The Mosquito Coast, Running on Empty, Parenthood, Stanley & Iris, Beautiful Girls, and the list goes on.  In addition to her onscreen success, Martha is also an accomplished stage actress having been nominated for three Tony Awards.

Jonathan Ke Quan
We first saw Jonathan when he played ‘Short Round’ in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom before he went on to play Data in The Goonies.  Jonathan went on to do some TV work, most notably as a cast member in Head of the Class after The Goonies.  He is currently a martial artist and working as a stunt coordinator, recently having worked with Jet Li on The One.

I hope these names brought back some fun memories for you, like they did for me.

The Goonies is airing on TELETOON Retro this Friday night and I will be hosting a chat on my blog for us to reminisce about the movie and the actors during the last half hour of the movie. I hope you’ll tune in at 7pm ET to TELETOON Retro and join me RIGHT HERE at 8:30pm ET so we can relive our youth together and discuss ‘where are they now’!
