Is it just me or are kids growing up way too fast? At least they are in San Diego, where nine students were caught watching porn on their cell phones. And masturbating. In class.
Woah, let me pause for a moment while you take in that last sentence. Needless to say, the kids from Bell Middle School were suspended, though no mention of what teacher Ed Johnson was doing while this seedy business was going on under his watch. Writing on the blackboard? Twiddling his thumbs? Also no mention whether he faces disciplinary action.
Since the suspension, some of the students have spoken about the incident, which they called 'gay testing.' In short, kids had challenged each other to watch gay porn; whoever got visibly turned on would be labelled homosexual.
“I was thinking we were getting better and that’s why we go out and speak in schools," said Patti Boman of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. "This is news to me and this gives me chills. It is terrible. They use that to attack and intimidate.”
Worryingly, the kids in question not only defended their actions but blamed the school.
“This is the school’s own fault," 13-year-old Aaron Masters told the San Diego Reader. "They’re always encouraging us to explore our sexuality—you know, so that we don’t wind up ashamed of being gay. So we did some exploring...And for that, we’re haters who deserve suspension? If it’s the masturbation part they have a problem with, well, excuse me for being 13."
Oh dear. Methinks somewhere along the line sex education talks have gone a little awry.
