Consignment Shopping

Nearly New and Clearly Fabulous!

Consignment shopping these days doesn’t involve a bunch of grandma’s musty old fur coats and vintage lace. Most of today's second-hand stores carry an amazing range of the latest labels and designer fashion and accessories at fabulous prices. We have three locations within a block of each other where I live, and I am constantly surprised at the high-end lines as well as more casual, everyday pieces that I find. From lululemon to Louboutin, and everything in between, there are plenty of treasures to be found inside.

Many items on consignment are brand new. I'm sure everyone has made an impulse purchase at some point in time. Like buying that ridiculously expensive pair of designer jeans that were a size too small in hopes that you may one day fit into them. Or that pair of gorgeous stiletto boots that you can't walk in that are sadly left to languish in your closet. And yes, there actually are some women who buy the latest must-have handbag of the season and wouldn't be caught dead lugging it around a mere four months later, even if it had barely made an appearance in public, so they quietly drop it off and cut their losses. I’ve seen gorgeous couture shoes that have never touched pavement and dresses right out of fashion magazines that end up waiting for a new owner. I once found a pair of designer shoes I had been coveting for months that were brand new and paid a quarter of the current retail price for them in a local boutique.

Before you make a purchase at a consignment boutique, check the item thoroughly to ensure that there are no flaws, stains, or rips. Most shops make sure that the item is in good condition before they resell, but many also don’t offer refunds. Be sure what you’re buying is in the shape you expect.  Don't be afraid to negotiate either. If an item hasn't moved in a while, you may be able to barter for a better price. If something isn’t in season, such as a leather jacket in summer, or sandals in the winter, you may get an even better bargain than you expected.

I love checking out second-hand stores for items for a special occasion, such as a standout dress for an event, or a statement piece of jewelry to jazz up an outfit. I’ve also found gorgeous designer sunglasses from all hottest names at a fraction of the original price. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to the store owner or manager. If you are looking for something specific, or are having a love affair with a particular designer, you can ask that they call or email you and inform you when something comes in. Once aware of your taste and style, many will be happy to let you know if something new is available and you don't miss out. Many stores have websites and showcase their inventory and new arrivals, and some are also embracing social media and will post their latest items on Twitter or Facebook. Go ahead and discover what your local consignment boutique has in store. You may be surprised to find the second time around ends up being the best time for everyone!
