Acne Is Not Just For Teenagers

How To Treat Acne At Any Age

Parenting children as they grow into young teens can be a tough job. Coupled with emotional changes, many face unpleasant physical changes, such as acne, which can often be a challenge to control.

In addition to helping children seek effective acne solutions, many moms have their own acne battles too. In fact, 75 per cent of adult acne occurs in women. Many pregnant mothers also face unexpected bouts of acne, as they experience changes in their hormone levels.

To limit the stress of acne, it’s important to learn ways to manage acne early to maintain a clear complexion. Here are my top skin care tips for treating acne – at any age:

Tackle it early - Even if it’s only a couple of blemishes, mild acne can cause long term damage to the skin, such as scarring. If you or your children are experiencing acne seek treatment earlier rather than later.

Get medical advice - Whether you’re a mom with acne, or have a child who is experiencing acne brought on by puberty – it is important you speak to your family doctor about treatment options. Most family doctors can provide appropriate treatment and can refer more difficult cases to a dermatologist.

Use gentle cleansers - Although many over-the-counter skin care products promise fast results, some contain ingredients that will dry out your skin and irritate. Use gentle cleansers to keep pores and skin clean.

Daily cleansing routine - Gentle facial cleansing before bed (to remove oil and makeup) and when you wake up (to freshen up your skin) is a simple routine to follow. Teaching your kids these healthy habits at a young age ensures they too are caring for their skin and will maintain these practices for life.

Don’t pick your blemishes - You can risk an infection or cause scarring by squeezing or picking your pimples. It’s best to keep your fingers away.

Acne and pregnancy/ breastfeeding - Seeking safe and effective treatment for acne during pregnancy and breastfeeding can be a challenge. Before trying any treatment, always check with your doctor to make sure it is safe for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to use.

One size does not fit all - With the vast number of acne products on the market, it can often be difficult to find the right treatment for you. Acne treatments work in different ways, depending on their active ingredients. Some products work by killing the bacteria responsible for acne, while others reduce the inflammation. Combination products, such as Tactuo, combine adapalene to unclog pores and benzoyl peroxide to kill bacteria, and help keep your skincare regimen simple. Other combination therapies include an antibiotic and benzoyl peroxide, or an antibiotic and vitamin- A acid.

Avoid pore-clogging skincare products - Clogged pores are a breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria. Avoid prolonged contact with thick foundation, hair oils and grease, damp clothing, hats, helmets and pads.
