Furniture Porn Confessional

The Madness Ends Today

Hello. My name is Nance and I’m a furniture porn addict.

For those of you unaware of this affliction, it is the unhealthy need to frequent Google for a quick search on the latest furniture warehouse sales. A constant need to check eBay for that perfect accent piece. The overwhelming desire to see what new “pieces” are on Kijiji or Craigslist. Or, for the true addict, the inability to delete tempting email updates for furnishing sales from ones inbox.

It started out innocently enough. My husband and I purchased a house that was a “complete-overhauler” (not to be confused with its infant cousin the “fixer upper”). Every item from light fixtures to the bathroom vanity had to be sourced. As a web-savvy, stay-at-home mom, it was disaster waiting to happen. With the complete overhaul on a strict budget, I had to get creative about ways to get what I wanted.

Lighting and linens were among my early successes. I found three beautiful light fixtures for 1/8 of the retail cost. Giddy with success, I started checking Craigslist and Kijiji for the best deals on kitchen cabinetry and counter tops. There were deals to be had out there and I found them!

eBay showed me the way to resolve our basement flooring budgetary constraints. It was so easy to compare prices on all of my options. With that area being the designated “kid” zone, I needed something fit for impromptu wrestling matches as well as explosive craft experiments, Playmobil battles and various spills. I ended up with a one-colour floor of these. Ah, those innocent early days when I had a purpose for my actions.

The more time I spent searching, the more I found myself compelled to search. I began inventing spaces to fill with items just so I could look. I signed up for email alerts from Joss & Main.

But now we come to the reason for my coming forward today. Lately I am finding myself searching for things I think would be nice in other people’s houses. When I caught myself eavesdropping on a couple at Home Depot talking about what they need to get for their house, then rushing home to fire up the computer, I knew something had to change. So today it ends. Wish me luck. But if, maybe in a couple of weeks, you really need to find that elusive item for your home at a bargain price…then maybe you can call me.

Baby steps right?
