Warning: this post isn't for the faint-hearted. While Japan has always been at the cusp of all weird trends (remember the bagel heads?), I'm really hoping this latest proclivity—for eye licking—doesn't spread to Western shores.
Photos of mega British celebrity chef Nigella Lawson being manhandled by her husband, multi-millionaire art collector Charles Saatchi are the talk of the day. In the shocking expose by the Sunday People, Saatchi is seen clutching his wife's throat on several occasions, while she appears distressed and terrified.
Since the release of the pictures, the media has been on overdrive, attempting to get at the private story behind the very public row, and questioning why no paparazzi—or witnesses, for that matter—dared to get involved when a woman was being visibly attacked.
For a time police even got involved, examining the photos, though no complaint was lodged. Inevitably, Saatchi has finally responded, in London's Evening Standard, claiming that what the world witnessed was no more than a "playful tiff" in which he "held Nigella's neck repeatedly while attempting to emphasise my point" about the couple's teenage children (from respective previous marriages).
Maybe the photos, and Nigella's tears, make the encounter look more violent than it actually was. Still, it is a great disservice to women everywhere to play down their argument. No disagreement, public or private, should involve physical force—of any kind. And abuse is never glamorous, not even when celebrities are involved.
For her part, Nigella has previously admitted that her marriage with Saatchi, now 9 years strong, is best described as "tempestuous."
Just goes to show, even colossal celebrities aren't immune to abusive and demeaning relationships.
In case you missed it, the most eagerly awaited famous baby (second only to the Royal, that is) has made it into the world: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West now have a daughter together, many months after his epic pregnancy announcement.
According to an article in People, the star of the reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim gave birth on Saturday. Though both she and babe are fine, the birth was premature, so "the littlest Kardashian is in an incubator."
The 32-year-old new mom had a well-publicized tough time with pregnancy, often facing criticism for her wardrobe—which included killer heels—and rumours that Kanye had cheated on her. Her divorce from former husband Kris Humphries only came through earlier this month.
Just 15 minutes prior to an event for his new album, Kanye cancelled and rushed to be by his girlfriend's side. It remains to be seen whether rapper boyfriend Kanye will propose.
"I'm so excited we're having a girl," Kim said on a recent episode of the Kardashians, upon discovering her baby's sex. "Who doesn't want a girl? I think they are the best. I know that's really what Kanye has always wanted—he wanted a little girl."
So far their daughter's name is undisclosed, but sources say it will of course start with a 'K.' Middle name Yeezus?
Congrats to the new parents!
