Post-Baby Fashion Tricks

When Spit-Up Replaces Style, What’s a Mummy to Do?

Fashion for the post baby woman

I used to think of myself as a pretty stylish person, but after having my first baby, gaining almost 50 pounds and discovering the wonders of daily spit up, I was convinced for a while that I might just have to live out the rest of my life in sweat pants!  Now that my daughter is 10 months old and sleeping through the night, I can finally take a minute or two to think about the way I look ....I realize now that fashion can be fun and even invigorating for new mommies!

If you’re one of the lucky few who for some reason has shed your baby weight in a couple of weeks (like my sister), you may be able to just throw on your skinny jeans and call it a day.  If however, you’re like the majority of women (myself included), you are probably wondering why someone has not invented a non-surgical way to remove the extra stomach that seems to have attached itself to your old one. There’s nothing more stressful than going to the mall and realizing that you now have to buy clothes that are 2-3 sizes bigger. My solution to this problem is: just don’t!   You need to give yourself a break and rid yourself of all that ‘new mommy guilt’ so many of us have. So go ahead...wear your maternity jeans and skirts for a few more months and just focus on these new-mama fashion must haves:

Sunglasses: The simplest way to add confidence...why not go for a classic oversized ‘Jackie-O’ pair or have fun with a jewel-encrusted cat-eye look.

Silk Scarf: The addition of a scarf either tied loosely around your neck or looped around your waist can instantly make you feel as if you are strolling the streets of Paris rather than shopping the diaper-aisle at Walmart.

Rubber-sole low wedges with a strap around the ankle: The rubber soul is a must as it is the key to real comfort , and the straps around the ankle is what distinguishes your shoe from a pair of runners. These are comfortable, stylish and it’s safe to carry baby when wearing them.

Cocktail Ring:  You don’t need to spend a lot of money on one of these –just pick a colour and design that you love. All women are drawn to sparkly things, and the easiest way to lift your spirits when you’re feeling  worn out is to look at something beautiful!

Now that I am armed with these items I feel like it really is possible to be stylish after baby.  In fact, sometimes the energy boost I get from wearing these things almost inspires me to hit the gym and work on my waistline...on second thought, I think maybe I’ll hold off on that goal a little bit longer and treat myself to some ice cream and  a long hot bubble bath!
