For The Love Of Vegetables

Learning To Love Fruits And Veggies At Any Age

You know those people that enjoy, I mean really enjoy eating a big bowl of salad for lunch? That's my husband. I can't help but stare at him as he devours his salad with such joy. I have always felt like salad was more of a meal for bunnies or deer. I wish I could LOVE a bowl of salad but I've yet to experience that.

I've struggled with eating vegetables since I was very little. Apparently I used to pick the grated carrots out of carrot cake. That's dedication...right?! I'm not proud of it; in fact being a picky eater is NOT fun! So no one was more surprised than I was when I came up with a product that gets kids excited about eating fruits and vegetables.

The irony is not lost on me. I think the wise old saying that We Teach Best What We Need to Learn Most must be true because I really needed to learn to eat fruits and vegetables myself.

What does a healthy diet look like? I think everyone has their own interpretation and concept. For some it's a very strict calorie counting, weighing all your food sort of thing, while others might have a loose definition that includes a little bit of everything. I don't think there is a one size fits all when it comes to healthy eating. We need to find what works best for us and for our families. For those of us who aren't wired to just want to eat healthy food I think taking a baby steps approach works well because it can be really overwhelming to try to do everything right.

I don't think forcing yourself or your kids to eat healthy food works well in the long run. Eating healthy foods just because it's good for you doesn't quite cut it for most of us. However I do think that finding ways inspire and motivate yourself and your kids to want to eat healthy food does work. Everyone has a different motivation button and reason to do things...the key is to find it. For kids maybe eating healthy foods makes them run faster or grow taller, for teens maybe it's clear skin or playing sports better, for adults maybe it's to look youthful or have more energy.

My point is that it's different for everyone. So if you're trying to get healthy perhaps take some time to think about what your motivation is for eating healthy. I have discovered mine and its made it a lot easier to eat my rainbows of fruit and vegetables!

I'm still working on the salad thing...
