Chris Cleave is the type of author who "walks the talk." While preparing to write his new novel Gold, Chris put himself through an intensive, athletic cycling program to get into the heads of the Olympic medal driven characters in his story. He also spent some time with children who have leukemia and was part of a team that raised money for leukemia research.
Gold is on the heels of Cleave's bestselling and award winning novels Little Bee and Incendiary but this time the setting is the London 2012 Oylmpic Games. Gold takes on the topics of friendship, family, commitment, and competition with cyclists Zoe Castle and Kate Meadows. Zoe and Kate share the same dreams, the same coach and the same world-class speed around the velodrome. Zoe stays the course but teammate Kate goes off track and vies for a comeback.
In Gold Cleaves shows the extremes of health. One the one hand there is the fitness of these athletes at the top of their game and then there's Kate's daughter who is a sickly child with leukemia. Zoe and Kate struggle with their ambitions and obligations. On their quest for gold and Olympic glory these two friends and rivals must make sacrifices and compete for the one remaining spot on the cycling team.
