This works best if you have two children. My kids used to fight over who got to sit in front seat of the car. "Shotgun!"
To avoid problems, I assigned one child as odd and one as even. After this they "owned the problem" of who got to sit in the front seat. They had to figure out if it was an odd or even day and then they would sit in the front or back seat accordingly.
I never heard another fight!
