Katja loves to prepare delicious meals, but believes her children should be able to forage for themselves if she’s reading a good book. When she’s not reading, she’s juggling the kids’ sports, her business, volunteering, writing, and an active social life that includes eating a lot of cheese.

There isn't a cheese drawer in her fridge, it's a cheese shelf, and she thinks cream and butter belong in most recipes. She comes from a long line of nomads who believed in the romance and adventure of travel and she’s trying to pass that on to her children.

Katja's a freelance writer who writes about travel, culinary tourism, food, and family. She also writes Jack Straw Lane, a blog about life and trying to balance running, a bad case of travel itch, and the kids' homework.

Because she loves using photography to tell a story, you can often find Katja on Instagram

About my kids:
I have a boy and girl, aged 17 and 12. He is a hockey playing book-worm. She's an equestrian. They're funny, active, smart, exasperating, and loving.
Parenting is...:
ummm...not sure. You want them, you birth them, you love them, they make you laugh, sometimes they make you cry, you try your best. Everywhere you turn there's a different expert. I ignore them all and go with my gut.
We know you don't have a lot, but when you do, what do you like to do in your spare time?:
Read, sample cheese, watch cheesy sci-fi shows.
When are you at your yummiest?:
When I've gotten my morning run in and after I've showered the sweat off.
If someone wrote a biography about you, what would be the title?:
The song She's A Maniac springs to mind, but I wouldn't want anyone getting the wrong idea.
What's currently in your purse?:
- a wallet full of fuel receipts - hand cream - a shopping bag - scratched sunglasses because I lost the case - 4 lip balms (I'm prepared for a shortage) - my phone - a notepad, 3 pens & 1 broken pencil - my camera
What superhero power would you like to have?:
Is there one that magically cleans houses?
If we gave you an elephant, where would you hide it?:
Under the pile of laundry waiting to be folded.
