Healthy-Sized Beauty In The Media

Time to Embrace Healthy-Sized Women in the Media

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it. - Confucius

Ah yes, this quote is so true. Society’s definition of beauty today is unrealistic and superficial. It’s our own fault. We have created the ultra-slim, plastic surgery, Botox generation and embraced it. Or perhaps only Hollywood has and certain parts of North America and Brazil.

Most of us realize the fact that the average woman is not a size 6 and will likely never be. I, for one, am loving the “healthy-sized” beauties that are currently in the media and can’t wait to see more of them. Note I don’t like using the “plus-sized” label because plus-size to Hollywood is the norm to everybody else. I’m talking about a healthy, curvy body. Women who eat and actually enjoy every morsel of food. I’m talking about the Nigella Lawsons and Christina Hendrickses in the media. Women with curves and hourglass figures.

Did you see the Mad Men siren at the 2010 Emmy awards? Ever since her appearance, her measurements have been a hot topic. Why? Could it possibly be because she’s fuller-figured but still looks amazing? What a concept! Reports say she’s a 36, 32, 36 but I highly doubt she’s only a 36 in the bust and hips especially. Recently a few costume pieces from the show were auctioned and one dress that Christina wore was likely a size 10 or 12 (39-30-39).

Nigella Lawson is 5 feet and 7 inches tall. Her measurements are 38-35-39 reportedly. Why should we care? Because she looks stunning but her waist is not a size 25.

Jessica Simpson was slammed for gaining some weight recently but I think she looks fantastic. Long gone are her Nick Lachey days of “chicken or fish” and Jessica is all grown up, more womanly than ever. She’s also starring in “The Price of Beauty” where she and her two best friends, Ken Paves and CaCee Cobb, travel across the globe to explore how different cultures define beauty and the extraordinary lengths that women will go to in order to achieve it. Jessica explores the high price that some women pay to feel beautiful, like a mother in Rio de Janeiro who cannot afford electricity but is secretly saving for butt implants.

When we see women like Nigella Lawson, Jessica Simpson and Christina Hendricks in the media, we can hope that healthy-sized women are making a true comeback. For good.
