By the time midwinter rolls around, finding motivation to get dressed is hard enough. Whether you’re still broke from holiday spending (or is that just me?) or saving up for upcoming holidays (I wish!), I think we can call agree that looking great for less is a goal we can aspire to.
It’s a common misconception that, to elevate your look, you’ve gotta elevate your spending. It’s simply not true. These tips won’t cost you a penny and - more importantly - they won’t add any extra time to your day. Shopping your existing wardrobe can make your closet feel suddenly new again by simply mixing pieces you hadn’t previously put together.
Mix your neutrals
Skip bright colours and stick to the basics: blacks, greys, whites (yes, even whites!), creams, navys, and shades of brown and tan and throw them on together. That’s right! Throw out those outdated ideas that you can’t wear navy and black together and pair them up for a fashionable and oh-so-easy style.
Think BIG
An oversized jacket or scarf looks impossibly chic while keeping you cozy and warm. You can go full street-style and wear both for added warmth and style, or stick to one if you’re feeling overwhelmed by fabric. I like to throw on a super-sized overcoat with everything from jeans and ankle boots to my work trousers and heels, or drape my biggest blanket scarf over my shoulders with an open jacket for date night (Bonus: a big scarf doubles as a shawl or blanket when you’re inside!).
Grab an unseasonal accessory
Accessorizing with unseasonal pieces helps breathe fresh (but perhaps still cold) air into your outfit by adding a pop of interest. Try pairing a chiffon-y scarf with a summer-y print with your wool jacket, or reach for a structured, straw bag instead of your go-to [faux] leather handbag. These tiny details make your outfit stand out without adding extra time.
Lean on textures or patterns
Faux fur. Tweed. Leather. Suede. Plaid. Polka dots. Leopard. Mix textures and patterns to add interest to everything from your work look to the duds you wear running errands. I love to pair tweed and leather, or a faux fur stole matched with plaid pants and a leopard print belt or shoe. Start with two similar-coloured patterns or textures and expand as you feel comfortable.
Winterize a summer piece
Don’t you hate knowing you’ve got your whole warm-weather wardrobe sitting unloved for six months? Don’t let those pieces go unworn! Pair a sundress with a turtleneck, tights, and your favourite boots. Layer a lightweight, summer-y blouse under a cozy cardigan. Wear your white jeans with a heavy sweater and moto boots.
