Eight Family-Friendly Spring Break Ideas

Where To Go, What To Do

Headed to a warm sunny beach this Spring Break? No, me neither. *sighs*. Whether you are doing March Break in Ontario or April Break in Newfoundland, we can all use the same family-friendly tips on Spring Break activities. A bit of organization and we can totally survive this March Break With Kids thing. Now where to go, what to do?

Spring Break at Indigo. Indigo|Chapters is holding FREE in-store Spring activities across Canada. Daily themes include: Dr. Seuss, Lego, Klutz crafts. (I've done Indigo Spring Activities in years gone by. TIP: get there 15 min before start time to get a good spot).

Sugarbush and Maple Syrup Festivals. The trees will soon be tapped and now is the time to layer up and get out to see how maple syrup is made. Generally a low budget outing.

The Home Depot Kids workshops. I don't know if these are across Canada, so please contact your local store. The kids workshops are a great opportunity to build something with your kids (read: it is not free babysitting). However, the activity itself is FREE and usually can be made within an hour.

Children's Museums, Science Centres, Art Galleries. It's great to find a family destination where you can have fun and learn both at the same time. Just know there will be lots of other families with the same great idea. TIP: carpool with a friend to help ease the parking limitations.

Zoos, farms and critter places. Animals are always a crowd pleaser. Dress appropriately and take an inside picnic so you don't have extra expense of cafeteria food.

Public Libraries. Public libraries will be holding free Spring break events (in Toronto they offer both English and French events). Movies, storytelling, magicians and more. FREE.

Public Swim times. If your city is lucky enough to have a free city pool be sure to check out their family swim times. Generally low budget—swimming marries a bit of sport with fun.

Spring break camp. Most sport clubs and YMCAs hold spring break camps at locations already in your 'hood. Be sure to check out discounts for siblings.
