The Cure For 'I'm Bored!'

Spring Break Travel Ideas

Spring Break always instills a sense of dread in my mind.  It means that we will be responsible for the Kidlet alone for 10 days!  Now that he's 9 has an opinion, and is not afraid to let us know about it, I never know what to do for those ten days.  My biggest dread is those two little words every parent cringes to hear “I'm bored”.

Some things that I have found entertaining even for him can also be fun for the adults in your relationship too.  There is a train that goes from Stettler to Big Valley in 1940's style.  Once you board the Alberta Prairie Railway Steam train your adventure begins.  The entire trip is 5-6 hours, including a buffet dinner at the community hall in Big Valley.

The biggest shock to our Kidlet came when the train robbers on horse back had a gunfight outside our train car window.  Then boarding the train and demanding spare change for charity, he was a little unsure at first, but got right into it!  They had an amusing pair singing songs from the 1940's in one car and a soloist in another.  They even had a saloon car, though the kidlets have to stay behind during that car visit.

All in all, it was a great visit, and complete with a quick overnight stay in Drumheller on the way home, we were able to stay at a hotel with a waterslide, a big plus for the parents and a decent breakfast made by you in the morning.  What kid doesn't love to make their own waffles in the morning?   Our final destination was the Tyrell Museum where we got to see and touch the dinosaur bones, and the best part upon our return home?  He didn't tell me he was bored for an entire day while he regaled us in his stories of our adventure!
