We're so connected to our phones. Everywhere we go, iPhone is there. At the grocery store, on our evening walks, in the washroom—you know you do it. But there's one place we'd like to see people without their eyes glued to screen—the dinner table.
A new survey by Pew Research Center found that 88 per cent of people think it's "generally" not cool to use your phone at dinner.
(I think I'm exclusively friends with the people in the 12 per cent. So I'm sending this article to all of them.)
With younger cohorts, phone use at the dinner table is still frowned upon. Sixteen per cent of people aged 18-26 still said it was #nobueno.
The stats get stronger and more definite when we consider other social scenarios.
Ninety-for per cent of the 3,000 adults surveyed said that it's totally uncool to have a phone out during a meeting, 95 per cent say phones shouldn't be used at theatres while 96 per cent say "heck no" to phone use while at religious services.
Here's the catch. While 82 per cent understand having phones out in social settings hurts conversation, 89 per cent of peeps still did it at their most recent event.
The survey found however, that men are more likely to come around to accept the phone's use in social settings than women.
Not to worry though, you don't have to place a ban on your devices.
Most people say it's generally okay to use your phones on the street, on the train and while waiting in line.
Got that, crew? Yeah, I'm talking to you.
