Easing The Pain

Divorce Lawyers Help Ease The Burden Of Legal Fees

Wouldn’t it be great if we were all rich?   But we’re not.

Most Yummy Mummies have to watch their dollars.  And nothing eats up those dollars faster than legal fees, especially if you’re broke because you’re splitting up with your partner.  And even if you’re not broke, why spend money on legal fees when there are so many better things to spend money on, like clothes, shoes, travel and ...you get the idea.

We all know the end of a relationship is emotionally painful.  What some people aren’t prepared for is how financially painful it can be.  Your assets get divided between two people, you need to support two households on the same income that used to support one household and then there are legal fees.  Ouch!

I know because I’m a divorce lawyer.  I see people struggle with this all the time.  But don’t despair; there are some services that Yummy Mummies can use to get some free legal advice.  Here are two that I am involved with:

New Directions
New Directions was started by the Junior League of Toronto over twenty years ago to provide services for women who had lost an intimate partner through separation, divorce, or death.  They are now part of Family Service Toronto and still work to help women who have lost their partner.

They offer information and referrals, support groups and free legal consultations with experienced family lawyers.  The lawyers provide a half-hour confidential consultation for women with family law questions.  These consultations provide women with an overview of their legal situation and an opportunity to discuss their options.

The clinics are in the evening.  The legal consultations are available in several languages.  For more information call 416.971.5506 or go to New Direction’s website.

The Lawyer Referral Service
The Lawyer Referral Service is run by the Law Society, the body that regulates Ontario’s lawyers. The Lawyer Referral Service lets you meet with a lawyer who specializes in family law for a free half-hour consultation.  You can ask questions and get information.  If you need a lawyer to assist you, the interview lets you decide if you would feel comfortable hiring that lawyer.

The service is simple to access.  You simply call a 1-900 number and speak to a Client Service Representative who will refer you to a lawyer who is able to deal with your issue.  You then call that lawyer and receive a free 30-minute consultation.   For more information, click here or call 416-947-3330. Unfortunately, while the consultation is free, there is a $6 charge for the call to the 1-900 number.

Good luck Yummy Mummies!  I hope this helps a little bit.
