How Make Up Can Give Back

And How Beauty is Found in Giving

When I decided to become a makeup artist ten years ago, I had two goals in mind, to improve women’s self esteem and to volunteer my time and expertise with local charities.  I am happy to share I am blessed with achieving these goals daily.

Volunteering my time, expertise and passion means I give generously without having to open up my wallet to feel like I am giving back.  It’s something I share with my friends, family and clients.  My children are encouraged to take part in “giving back” by helping organize donations that we collect for a not-for-profit that I support called WomenAide.

WomenAide was founded by an inspirational woman named Tracey Cairns in 2006.  This not-for-profit collects donations in the form of new products only, described as “goods-in-kind”.   All products collected are donated to three shelters for abused women in our local community.  I instantly chose to adopt and support WomenAide when Tracey shared with me more about the women who use the shelters.  What circumstances lead up to them leaving their home, with children in tow, in the middle of the night, and that these women have nothing in-hand other than hope for safety.

Twice per year for the past three years, I've organized a donation drive encouraging my family, friends, business associates and clients to donate products ranging from body and bath care, to baby essentials, to non-perishable food items.  Each drive brings more awareness to the needs of our local community.  Each drive teaches my children that they are fortunate to be safe and to be aware there are others who are in need.  Each drive I invite a small group of women into my home, to meet Tracey, to share and spend time together in appreciation for all that we have to be grateful for.

This year when I publish my very first book, Mango Tango Makeup Guide, I will donate a portion of the profits from book sales, in products to continue to support WomenAide.

This year, may you be inspired to adopt a local charity.  Rather than feeling like you need to donate money, find a way to donate your time, organize a donation drive, or offer your expertise.  You will be surprised at how much you gain from the experience.

There is no dollar value that can be placed on the experience.

I promise.
