We apologize when you bump into us and need we mention a certain, ahem, Ryan Reynolds.

And let us not forget our favourite Canadian sport—hockey.

Taking Politeness To The Extreme

What do I love about Canada? What don't I love about Canada! I love that whenever I apologize to an inanimate object for bumping into it, I am displaying a uniquely Canadian characteristic: extreme politeness to all things regardless of breathing status.

I crave the nectar of the gods, maple syrup. I love poutine, Beavertails and back bacon. I love that most Canadian kids can do two things really well—swimming and skating, because we get weather extremes in this glorious country. I love the utter vastness of the land we live in and our proximity to our very cool neighbours to the south.

I love that I puff out my chest when I say I'm Canadian in other countries. I love that every Canada Day I get misty and I love that I can tell my children unequivocally that they live in the best country on earth.

Braving The Winter Weather

As a winter baby I love how much Canadian identity is formed around the ice rink. Early morning drives to the rink with a cup of coffee in hand. Skating on backyard rinks and ponds. The way we each fiercely root for our local pro teams to succeed but still collectively hold our breaths every time our Canadian team steps on the ice. The cheese cutter skates, the Henderson goal, the toe picks, the zamboni, The Sweater, the Rideau Canal, the loonie buried at centre ice.

So much about this simple iced surface is engrained in the very fabric of our national identity.

Our Official Languages

J'aime que le Canada a deux langues officielles. Teaching my children English and French is a gift that will help them in education, in travel, in work and in their social lives. Je suis fier de faire partie d'une famille Canadienne bilingue.

Making The World's Best Memories

The best part of living in Canada are the gorgeous sandy beaches and the special memories my family creates there. I grew up at the beach, playing in the sand, splashing in the water and listening to the waves. Now that I have my own family, we spend our summers doing the same. My boys love the water. They are expert sand castle builders and jellyfish spotters. The beach is our Canadian happy place.

We Love Our Ice Time No Matter What Time Of Year

At any time of year, even in the middle of summer, there are Canadian kids in arenas suited up for the game of hockey, along with parents with nose pressed up against the glass holding a Tim Hortons coffee. January or July, Edmonton or Toronto, we're keeners for ice time. How fabulous is that?

Our Country's Colours

I love our country’s colours. From the patriotic red of fall maple leaves in Antigonish, NS to the gloomy grey of the fog in Tofino, BC, to the deepest blacks and lightest whites of the skin of the people around me, I love the diversity of Canada’s palette. My great white north is anything but, and I love it.

The Amazing Wilderness That Surrounds Us

One of the things I enjoy most about Canada now that I am a parent is the amazing wilderness that surrounds us.

Canadians are hearty people; growing up in the prairies, we all walked, biked, swam and hiked everywhere in packs. These days we might be a bit more protective with our little ones, but the opportunities for family fun abound. Step outside your door and you have creeks, valleys, escarpments, parks and playgrounds galore. Drive a short distance and you have hiking and camping sites worth bringing your camera along for. Hop a plane and you can see coastal cliffs, vineyards, rainforest, great plains, incredible rock formations, even arctic tundra.

I can’t wait to explore more of Canada with my kids, and we are so lucky as Canadians that we can enjoy vacations to distant lands within our very own nation.
