As a wanna-be supermom to three kids that means I have three classrooms looking for contributions to their Halloween festivities. Of course, all three kids want something different which means I’ve been trying to come up with creative recipe ideas for weeks. Thankfully, I think I may have nailed it and thought I should share the Top Five Halloween Class Treat Ideas that are kid friendly and Canned Soup Mom approved!
These Ghost Cupcakes are my son’s choice for his classroom Halloween treats.
Bake 24 cupcakes of your favourite flavor according to package directions and when completely cooled, ice with white icing.
Meanwhile, using a Food Writer Pen (I bought mine at Michael’s) colour ghost faces onto 24 large marshmallows, then add a dab of white icing to the bottom of each marshmallow and press onto the middle of each iced cupcake. Voila! Be prepared to accept the most creative cupcake award—and I won’t tell anyone how easy they are if you don’t.
These are perfect for parties that include parents too as they are a yummy combination of sweet and salty.
Arrange miniature pretzels onto parchment lined baking sheet, top with one Hershey Hug each. Bake in pre-heated 350F oven for 3-5 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately (but gently!) press one candy corn onto each. Let cool completely and send them to school or package them in Halloween themed cello bags from your local dollar or craft store and hand out as gifts.

You can make these on cookie sticks or off but either way be sure to have the kids help make the Jack-O-Lantern faces.
Simply follow the instructions on the cereal box to make Rice Krispies treats adding orange food colouring (I prefer the gel) once the marshmallows are melted and before adding the cereal. Once the cereal is mixed in, with your hands lightly greased with butter, shape into balls, insert a piece of candy corn or piece of pretzel stick on the top, insert cookie sticks on the bottom (if using) and place on wax paper. Once your pumpkins are cool it’s time to turn them into Jack-O-Lanterns. Using black gel icing let the kids go to town making their favourite fun and spooky Jack-O-Lantern faces.
Of course you get bonus points for being the mom who actually let her kids help make the classroom treats!
Simply mix up a batch of sugar cookies from the package. Roll into 1 inch balls and drop onto a parchment lined baking sheet and bake according to package directions (I gently flattened the balls just a bit before baking). Once you remove them from the oven, quickly draw five squiggly lines from the centre of each cookie using red gel icing and press a Smartie (now available in Halloween colours) right into the middle of each cookie. You can also add a pupil with more red gel or by melting a small amount of chocolate chips in the microwave and dabbing a bit of melted chocolate using a toothpick onto the centre of each Smartie (I forgot to do the pupils in the image above!).

My kids LOVE party popcorn and you can easily customize this recipe to any theme, colour scheme or holiday by using different food colouring and sprinkles.
Simply pop a bag of plain microwave popcorn (be sure to use the popcorn that pops up white, as the buttered flavored ones are usually too yellow) and allow to cool in a large bowl. Then melt half a package of white candy melts according to package directions (I bought this bag of candy melts for $3.99 at Michaels). Once candy is melted, add the desired amount of food colouring (I prefer the gel food colouring also available at Michaels), mix and then pour onto popped popcorn. Add desired amount of sprinkles then mix well to coat popcorn. Allow to cool for approximately 20 minutes before serving or packaging.
For classroom serving and packaging options you can bring along in a fun plastic bowl, portion the popcorn out into plastic cups or prepare as gifts in cello bags that fit your theme.
For the Halloween version of party popcorn I use orange food colouring gel and orange and black sprinkles.

Maija is a busy mom to three busy children – children who insist on eating every day. Between shuttling kids to dance or cheer practice, tae kwon do, hockey, or baseball, she often finds herself in the kitchen looking at three hungry children (and a husband) and a clock ticking towards dinner time.
