Wall Art

Many people feel they need to put off decorating their walls until they can afford the perfect piece of original art, but you don’t have to break the bank to give your wall that little somethin' somethin'. I have some fresh trendy tips guaranteed to give your friends wall envy, that won’t take up too much of your time or money. Cause, let’s face it, if you’re like me, at home with two young kids, you don’t have much of either to spare.

Photos are a great way to instantly personalize a space. Choose an odd number that relate in theme and group them together. Here I added some interest to our front hallway by hanging this grouping of oversized family shots.

Stick to all black and white photographs or keep the frames the same colour to give your display a unified look. If you are looking to do a larger grouping think about doing something like this.

Framing beautiful paper as ‘disposable’ art is a cheerful way to decorate and because it’s so economical you don’t feel guilty switching it up each season. I framed this beautiful Paris inspired wrapping paper and hung it on a blank wall in our dining room.

The size and colours balance out the large buffet on the opposite wall and it matches perfectly with the pale green wall colour. Best of all, when I get tired of it, I’ll go shopping for another design. The total cost for this was under $20.00. There are so many beautiful designs to choose from and so many great patterns for kids’ rooms too!

Another option for smaller displays is framing scrapbook paper. I bought a few simple frames and displayed holiday themed paper in them in December. Now with spring on the way, I chose three fresh, new designs and layered them on a shelf.

This spring one of the hottest colours in interior design is turquoise. If you want to keep up with the latest colour trends but don’t want to paint your walls each season, an easy way to bring colour onto your walls is by painting some simple canvas art. It’s easy to do and makes a great impact. You can get creative by adding some details, like stripes or flowers; just keep it simple.

These are just a few ideas to decorate your space and fill up your walls on a budget. So while you’re saving your pennies for your first Picasso, get creative and make your very own one-of-a-kind wall candy.

Sarah Gunn has had an addiction to all things interior design for as long as she can remember. When other teenagers were getting clothes for gifts, Sarah was asking for art supplies, serving platters and pretty cushions. She has been known to wait three years for ‘just the right’ coffee table (which, with a glass top, she can’t use anymore until all of her boys, including her husband, grow up). Although she does not live in her dream house yet, beneath all of the toys, she is making it a home one step at a time.
