Rethink Your Space

A lot of people avoid entertaining at home simply because they feel their space is lacking in some way. They fuss and fret that the living room décor seems dated or the room feels too small.

But a lot can be done to correct these problems in just one hour, one day or one weekend. You've probably seen that adorable Nate Berkus demonstrate the inexpensive Redesign process on the “Oprah” show.

Now here's a few ideas on how you can achieve a fresh new look for your space.

Start by removing any clutter – magazines, mail, toys, craft projects, etc. Redefine the purpose of your living room.

Take down any heavy drapery panels – summer is almost here so you want to maximize that long awaited sunshine. Nothing says fresh like a pair of sheers fluttering in the breeze of an open window.

If you've got lovely hardwood or laminate flooring, consider rolling up the area rug for the summer months. Your room will instantly feel more spacious.

Don't under estimate the power of the paint can. Painting is still the most affordable and dramatic change you can make to a room. To select a new colour, look for inspiration in your favorite artwork or accessory.

Choose a bold new colour to use as an accent, and purchase a few throw cushions, a large bowl or a vase. Disperse this new colour evenly throughout the room, replacing some of your existing accessories.

Hang a decoratively framed mirror in an unlikely spot to reflect more light. Or hang it where it will reflect the view of your garden.

Add some greenery – real or silk. The best silk plants are those with smaller leaves – they will look more realistic than a broad leaf or palm. Any plant breathes life into a tired old space.

If your lampshades seem dull or yellow, replace them with crisp white linen shades for a fresher look.

If you have a larger room, create a few separate and distinct seating areas for your guests to enjoy a chat. Intimate conversational groupings help people feel more relaxed.

Never be ashamed of your home. It makes no difference if your furniture came from a thrift shop or Thomasville – a simple redesign can enhance any space to reflect your style and personality.

Now go on, send those invitations out and get the party started !!
