No More Rolling Down The Mattress

by: Mona Blah

My daughter has GRD (gastroesophoheal disease) which causes her to spit up and projectile vomit. Our pediatrician recommended we elevate her mattress by 30 degrees to help the food stay down in her tummy. This was great advice except for one problem: she would roll down the mattress in a few hours after we put her to sleep, essentially not benefiting from the elevation of the mattress. We did not want to put her in a harness designed to prevent rolling so we had to come up with an alternate solution. One night I took a simple receiving blanket and rolled it up so it was about 3-inches in diameter and placed it under the crib sheet in the middle of the mattress. It works wonderfully: the baby stays put, being gently restrained by the elevated surface, if she lands on it with her face, the roll is low enough that it doesn't cover her nose. Now that she has learned to roll onto her tummy, the blanket roll stops her from rolling into the crib slats which she's already bruised her head with. The blanket should resemble a rolling pin; we tend to curve the bottom end a bit toward the child so she is even more cradled.
