Top 13 Healthy Halloween Treats

Mix in some healthy treats with the Halloween tricking

Like so many others, Halloween is one of those holidays where we wish to bits we didn’t care what we stuff our faces with. On the one hand, who doesn’t love an excuse to dress up like a cat and play with pumpkins? On the other hand, chowing down on ultra-processed, sugar-packed candy is a one-way ticket to cavities and a mean case of the grumps. We just can’t throw caution to the wind and chow down on artificial colours, "natural" flavours, refined sugars and hydrogenated palm oils. We know how icky that will make us feel.

We worry about the kids though, right? We don’t want them missing out. I can hear you now: “But I only buy Halloween candy for the kids!” Right. Despite your good intentions, you know that jumbo pack of mini chocolate bars is going to disappear long before the trick-or-treaters come knocking. Besides, don’t the little ones deserve some superfood-filled, health-promoting goodies, too? (YES!)

Instead of stocking up on store-bought candy this year, try making these healthy treats for yourself and the kiddos.

Kid-Friendly Classics

1. Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Cups: Once you try these, you won’t be able to go back to those orange-package peanut butter cups.

2. Raw Oreo Cookies: One look at the scary ingredients list on the original cookie box will have you running to this chocolate-y, superfood-packed and delicious raw recipe.

3. Chocolate Crispy Rice Squares: Just like Mama used to make (sans marshmallows, of course, and with extra protein to keep your blood sugar steady).

4. Matcha Peppermint Patties: Totally addictive. No need to worry about caffeine from the matcha if serving these to kids—the recipe only calls for a teensy bit of tea for colour.

Fancy-Pants Treats

5. Vanilla Cacao Bliss Bites: Vanilla is stress-reducing and antioxidant-rich—as if you needed an excuse to chow down on these.

6. Chocolate Truffles: These decadent chocolate truffles are packed with dates, a high source of fibre and antioxidants.

7. Chocolate Cranberry Blossoms: A tart, fruity take on the peanut butter cup.

8. Chocolate-Covered Figs: Chocolate and figs, two aphrodisiac ingredients for a romantic treat after the kids fall asleep.

9. Almond Honey Brittle: Try this treat on its own or atop some coconut milk ice cream.

Superfood Sweets

10. Superfood Chocolate Brittle: A great way to use up the extra superfoods like gogi berries, pumpkin seeds, and cacao nibs you may have hanging around the kitchen.

11. Superfood Chocolate Cups: Power up your almond butter cups with antioxidant-rich gogi berries.

12. Superfood Bon Bons: Having trouble stomaching that immune-boosting bee pollen? Follow my lead and wrap it in chocolate for Halloween.

13. Superhero Balls: Dressing up like a superhero this year? Eat these superfood-packed treats and you’ll feel like one, too. These also make a fantastic energy-rich snack to keep in the fridge at work.
