Food Revolution Day is May 19, 2012

Stand Up for REAL Food

Back in 2010, Jamie Oliver shocked us when he exposed what school lunches were made of over in Huntington, Virginia and started the conversation about school food.  Now two years later, we're still talking-and Jamie hasn't stopped advocating. There has been some real progress, from getting pink slime out of supermarkets and schools, to having flavored milk taken off kids lunch trays.  People are becoming more and more aware of healthy eating, and those who have cooking or gardening  skills are starting to step up and share them.  Some are even showing us how other countries get their kids to eat vegetables.

Everything Food Revolution is ramping up again this May, and this time it isn't Jamie that's leading the way, it's US.

That's right, us.  You and me.  Food Revolution is asking people to sign up to be ambassadors in their city, and host a Food Revolution event May 19.  At the time of publishing this article, there are 206 events in 142 cities and 22 countries.  You can host a dinner party, or create another event to spread awareness and raise funds to support Food Revolution.

Now, it should be noted that there is no local Food Revolution foundation in Canada and the funds raised go to chapters in the United States, United Kingdom, or Australia but that shouldn't stop you from raising awareness about real food and making your kid's lunches better.  It's never too late (or too early!) to start learning about food and where it comes from, and this is your perfect opportunity.

Take the kids to a farm, plant a garden, or have a family meal together.  You can find resources on the Food Revolution website, with  recipes, videos, and more.  The only way to change things is to get the conversation rolling!

She may go by the name Scatteredmom online, but Karen really is anything but scattered when it comes to the kitchen.  Churning out tasty treats within view of the Georgia Strait on Canada's west coast, Karen will hand you an organized weekly meal plan or teach you how to make meals from scratch.  As Mom to a teenage boy, she knows exactly what it takes to keep kids full and happy-which has really come in handy with her job as the Food Editor at Yummy Mummy Club.

A strong supporter of Food Revolution who has been endorsed by Jamie Oliver himself, by day Karen can be found working as a special education teaching assistant, running a kitchen and showing teenagers how to cook nutritious meals for themselves.  By night, when she's not chatting on Twitter and answering cooking questions,  she writes her popular blog Notes From the Cookie Jar, or posting mouthwatering recipes over at Chasing Tomatoes.  Not afraid to give her opinion and passionate about community, Karen spoke at Blissdom Canada 2010 and her writing has been published in Canadian Living magazine, as well as in various online publications.
