Tell us all about your blog
Sweet Potato Chronicles tells the never ending story of the well-fed family. It’s a one-stop-shop where you can find a recipe for tonight’s dinner, nutrition advice, great products, read up on your favourite (foodie) celebs and connect with other parents. We know families want to do their best for their families and we want to be part of the solution. We like to say that SPC’s your best friend in the kitchen.
What inspired you to begin writing about food?
Laura Keogh, my partner on the site, and I both come from traditional media. We worked together at FASHION Magazine for years. I was editor-in-chief and she was beauty director. You know, dream jobs, basically. We had kids around the same time and were both looking for new challenges and more flexibility. We kept talking about how we wanted to marry our professional skills with our life stage…. Then suddenly SPC was born. I think the cliché of writing about your experience is really true and I don’t know what I spend more time doing than cooking right now!
Describe your favourite food memory.
My favourite food memories are meals that my husband and I have had while traveling. I used to travel a lot for work and when Ben and I first met he was living in New York, so a lot of our dates were restaurant meals in Brooklyn (Al Di La), Paris (Le Famille, Colimacon), Miami (some Cuban joint I can’t remember the name of!)… I really love the way food can introduce you to a new country or city. I hope my kids have those kinds of adventures through food, too.
Cook or bake? Which one? Either, both, and why?
I’m definitely more of a cook than a baker. I do like baking and have been inspired by Kim Boyce’s book, Good to the Grain, to branch out beyond regular white flour. Now I’m baking with spelt, buckwheat and I’d try more if I had a bigger pantry for all those bags of flour! I think I’m more comfortable as a cook because it’s what I do more. And honestly, I don’t need a plate of cookies staring at me from the counter…
What’s the best thing you’ve ever eaten? Where did you eat it?
The best thing I ever ate was a drink. The fresh squeezed orange juice at The Lapa Palace in Lisbon was a revelation. Okay, I was on my honeymoon and perhaps inclined to hyperbole. But we still talk about it! It was just the orangiest orange juice we’d ever had. Sometimes simple things are the ones that stick with you.
Share your favourite recipe.
I feel like you’ve asked me which of my kids is my favourite! Although I’ve said I’m more of a cook than a baker, and although our site tends to run healthy recipes, I’m giving you The Rhubarb Crostata. Because, well, look at it! It’s shockingly easy to make, is delicious (a revelation!) and impresses the hell out of people. Even your kids.
