We Love Merry Kuchle

Foodie Of The Week

Tell us all about your blog

I started Merry With Children just over 6 years to chronicle my move to Canada and my new life as a wife and stepmother.  Over the years, I've started writing more and more about food.  While I still write about my family and our life, I find that food is a thread that runs through it all.

What inspired you to begin writing about food?

Even though I work full time, providing healthy meals for my family is still one of my top priorities and the priority of many of my readers. Sharing the family-friendly recipes that worked with my family was a logical next step.

  Describe your favorite food memory

I remember cooking at my grandparents house growing up.  My grandfather frying chicken in his dress pants and shirt before going to church, my granny stirring a boiling pot full of jelly on a hot summer day, baking Christmas cookies to give to all the neighbors.  I have tried to make some of these same memories with Evan.  We cook together and bake together regularly.

Cook or bake—which one? Either,  both, and why?

I enjoy both baking and cooking though if given the choice...I bake.

What is the best thing you've ever eaten? Where did you eat it?

I don't know if I can point to one best thing I've ever eaten. I tend to think fondly of foods eaten in certain places. For example, I love food in Austin, TX, where I used to live. There were so many dive-y restaurants there where you can get amazing food for really reasonable prices. Another example is the wonderful food I had growing up at family dinners.  My tastes have changed so much that I'm sure it wouldn't taste the same now but I still hold it fondly in my memories.

  Share a favorite recipe

My favorite recipe I want to share is peach cobbler. Growing up in the Southern US, I grew up loving good, Southern, comfort food. One of the most prevalent examples of comfort food was peach cobbler. The hilarious thing was I never learned how to make it until last year. This peach cobbler recipe tastes exactly how I remember peach cobbler growing up and it is DELICIOUS!
