Tell us all about your blog
From scratch for a modern family, Family Feedbag is a collection of original recipes and photos from my kitchen in Victoria, BC. Just like home cooks used to jot down a recipe on the back of an envelope for a neighbour, I take notes and photos while I cook and share my recipes on Family Feedbag. Home cooks have always shared recipes, except now our recipes are digital and our neighbourhood is global.
What inspired you to begin writing about food?
Feeding a family can feel a little thankless at times. You put a lot of effort into preparing a beautiful meal and in minutes it is eaten and gone. With the blog, I can take photos and share the recipe and have something to point to and say "Look, there, it happened. I made that."
Describe your favorite food memory
When I was about 10 years old, my dad set up a pretend burger shop on top of our old portable dishwasher in the middle of the kitchen. He had pickles, cheese, tomatoes, and all the condiments, and my brother and I got to pick what we wanted on our burger and dad wrapped it up in wax paper to serve it to us. I love having fun with food like that!
Cook or bake—which one? Either, both, and why?
Oh man. Really? I can't choose! Both happen in my kitchen pretty equally. Baking apple pie is where I'm at my most genuine in the kitchen, but I also love cooking rustic comfort food like beef stew, herb-roasted pork, or a big pot of cheesy pasta.
What is the best thing you've ever eaten? Where did you eat it?
It was a roasted chicken while sitting on a restaurant patio in the Barcelona harbour. I had been backpacking for weeks and living off bread and cheese, which was cheap and easy to find. I met a backpacker from The Yukon and we decided to treat ourselves to a good meal. We feasted hungrily on that crispy bird and the mashed potatoes it came with!
