Buying from a local farmer has many benefits. Eating local is not only healthier, it also supports your town's local farmers which is a win-win for all involved.
Learn about and meet your local farmers
Where is the best place to do this? Your local farmer’s market of course! Chat up your local farmers and you will be amazed at how educated, inspired, and appreciative you will become for them. You will look at and taste your food differently. You will also be amazed at what other vendors and artisans local farmers’ markets also attract to their stalls. I love the vibe and energy of farmers’ markets. Click for a directory of Ontario’s farmers’ markets.
Eat a local meal
Challenge yourself to cook a meal that is mostly made up of locally-grown ingredients. Peruse your local farmers’ market and get inspired to eat local, and by default, with foods that the current season has to offer. Research has shown that significant differences in nutrient content of seasonal food to be greater than purchasing them out of season. For instance, researchers in Japan found that there was three times more Vitamin C content in spinach harvested in the summer versus the winter.
Grow your child’s sense of wonder and appreciation for nature’s bounty and gifts
A trip to the farmers’ market is an excellent opportunity to teach your kids about where their food comes from and what eating local is all about. Make it fun by giving your kids some money, and allowing them to peruse the stands and buy locally grown food directly from the farmer who grew it!
