The Zareinu Educational Centre

Treatment For Special Needs Children

Zareinu school for children with special needs

Cory Bickof was born with Down syndrome. After spending the first six days of his life in the hospital’s neo-natal intensive care unit, his parents brought him home where they were visited by two women from Zareinu; an educational centre in Toronto that provides treatment for children with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, cognitive delays and many other disorders.

Cory’s mother Leanne doesn’t recall how the school found out about her son or who sent the women to her home, but she says it was the best thing that could have happened to them.

Cory started in the Infant Program at Zareinu at just four weeks old. Through MEDEK physiotherapy, he was able to learn to hold his head up, grasp objects and reach other milestones that come naturally to typical children.  Leanne spent every Tuesday and Thursday at Zareinu where Cory had access to all of the therapies he needed under one roof.

Through positive reinforcement from his teachers and incredible care provided by his therapists, Cory eventually learned to sit, crawl, walk and, later, jump, and climb.

“Cory’s muscles were so weak that he could barely lift his head when he was a baby,” says Leanne. “Now he’s climbing up play structures—something I never thought he would be able to do.”

Cory is now six years old and is about to embark on his first year as a full-time public school student in a split SK-Grade 1 class. The fact that he has graduated from Zareinu after six life-changing years is bittersweet for his mother.

“Zareinu has been a haven for us,” she says, emotion evident in her voice. “It has given me a real sense of security knowing that my child was not only well cared for but also stimulated in the best way possible.”

For the students and their families, Zareinu is more than a school or a treatment centre; it is a place that offers support and understanding. “For over 20 years, Zareinu has been providing integrated multi-disciplinary services for children with special needs,” explains Stacy Markin, co-chair of the Annual Zareinu Fashion Show and a mother of a Zareinu student. “The outstanding staff and volunteers at Zarineu work with and get to know both the children and the parents. They work with the needs of each child; designing unique, individual therapeutic programs.”

On November 20, 2012 at Bellvue Manor, Escada will be showcasing their 2013 Resort Collection in a New York style runway show. Together with the students of Zareinu, they will join together to raise awareness and funds in support of Zareinu Educational Centre at the highly anticipated ninth Annual Zareinu Fashion Show.
