The Working Fairytale

A Stay-at-Home on How Staying at Home IS Work

Go back to work?! I AM WORKING! Staying at home is my work.

This full-time, non-paying job is the hardest, most frustrating, most tiring, most wonderful work I have ever done.

It's my dream job, but it ain't no Fairytale...

I am the Queen of my castle. My chief responsibility is raising my two young princesses who take their roles very seriously.

Mornings are not pretty. Dressing, dining and dashing: their schedule and mine inevitably clash. Princess O must be shuffled to her Pre-Kindergarten adventure, while Princess A is scooped out of the dangers of hallway coat battles. The Queen has saved a scrape and avoided a cry!

Next is kiddieGym class. Running, tumbling and fumbling. I'm sweating and out of breath, why isn't my toddler? This mad dashing Mummy leaps over snow traps while pushing the biggest, heaviest stroller EVER. This is work... working out!

Next comes the grocery shop. Call in the chef, nutritionist, economist. Oh, that's me. See how I can juggle a malfunctioning cart, grumpy old timers, organic vs. processed, and a two-year-old's tantrum. Good multi-tasking, Queen Mummy.

Off to fetch Princess O, and back to the messy castle we go. Another meal is demanded, gobbled and thrown. Screams, shouts, laughter and Princess A is down for her beauty rest. Princess O, of course, is raring to challenge me during her precious one-on-one time. Candyland with Dora, tea with the Ponies, dress up and more and more clutter and chaos within my walls.

The faint, no actually, really loud cries of Princess A flare up. This is where it gets tricky. One Princess tired and cranky, one lively and happy... Wonder Pets anyone? With the distraction of programmed amusement, my chores can now begin. Can it, however, be completed?

Half done before the shrieking and hair pulling begins.

The final meal of the day is wolfed down and, by pleasant surprise, celebrated! This Queen smiles and laughs again. Her Princesses delight in her joy.

Wow, the "Witching-Hour" comes and passes with nary a scrape, bruise or desperate call for Daddy's immediate return.

Pitter pat, giggle, cries and kisses, the Princesses have finally retired. Quick dinner to catch up with the hubby and this Queen settles in for her well deserved beauty rest. Happiness is forever in my castle as I continue to work...

Happily Ever After!
