Mummy Needs to Play Too

OK. I can't fight it any more. I have tried several times to write this article about Mummy fun. What do I do to have fun? And what it is that I can't fight anymore you ask yourself? Well, it seems I don't do much these days. And frankly, I don't think I am alone here. Am I right?

Growing up I always had lots of friends. I was going and doing stuff, fun stuff I might add and then I grew up. I got a job, got married and then there just seemed like I didn't really have time for many friends or stuff that one does with friends, you know, movies, drinks, dinners out. It doesn't help that I worked evenings and weekends. A sure way to kill any social life I might have had.

Now I just don't have the time. Sad I know. Unnecessary say some, others of you are probably insisting that I should make time. Well, frankly when it comes to Saturday night I'm just tired. Not only am I a full time Mummy, I’m a full time radio news editor and part time freelance writer as well. I just don't have the time or energy for playtime.

Despite my current schedule and my desperate need for more sleep, I recognize there is one important key to the fun I do have these days (because don't get me wrong, my life isn’t completely void of fun) is good girlfriends. And I do have a few of those.

When my oldest daughter got to school, I got a chance to meet some great Moms.  Friends to chat with at school, to use as a sounding board, to go to the movies with, and of course, to drink with and shoot the shit with (which all Moms know is a must-have. How else can we deal with all the crap in our daily lives?) As a Mom, I think that is the greatest gift. Friends that are also Moms allow you to really be yourself, crap and all. I am a strong believer in Moms finding some time, no matter how small, for your self. Whether it’s a quick coffee on a rainy Wednesday or dinner and a movie with a group of girlfriends, Moms still need time to not be Mom, to just be a woman.

So it's with my girlfriends I strive to have more fun, to be more fun and to live life a little larger.

Drinks anyone!?!
