A Grandparent at Age 42

Seasoned and Ready For This Next Phase

Dear Erica Ehm and the Yummy Mummy Club,

Please accept this notice that my membership status must be changed effective June 15th, 2011 from active MILF to GILF. I have thoroughly enjoyed participating at the MILF level, but have ascended to the GILF level after 9 months of preparation.

You see, I’ve become a grandmother at the tender age of 42. A little sooner than I’d originally planned for but the universe saw fit to throw a monkey wrench wrapped in pink receiving blankets into my plans. And it has been the best thing to happen to me in a very long time! Time with her is so precious and guarded by every family member. We left for a weekend to visit my father, gone only 4 days and I swear our little bundle doubled in size! It’s very hard to share her with anyone. (Excuse me a moment while I untangle the pastel baby sparkle wool from around my laptop mouse). Ok. I am crocheting for the baby. Not knitting. Crocheting is sexier.

Oh I’m not giving up my 3 inch heels, wine-tasting parties, or date nights with my husband. This grandmother thing hasn’t got me to blue rinse my hair or put on a sweater when it’s 25’c outside. I’m still having a blast enjoying my 40’s. But I find myself showing pictures of my grandbaby to total strangers, updating Facebook with each of her visits, and I can talk forever on the phone about all the cute things she does. I find the pain of her leaving to go home with her parents so sharp. I think about her all the time and am even planning events for her to go to next summer when she’s walking. I am enjoying the phone calls from my daughter who asks for advice on things like how to deal with cradle cap, switching formulas and complaints about having no time to clean her apartment. I get a kick out her asking for advice. I had lots to share when she was a younger teen but she was having none of it! There is payback. I believe that now!

Oops,I digressed a little. This is a side effect of grandparentitis. I still have my youngest living at home (15), and the oldest child (22) has returned to continue postsecondary schooling locally. No empty nest for us yet and I’m ok with that!

The members of the YMC are great and inspiring and I’ve learned from them, cried with them, and laughed with them. I’m still a Mummy, but seasoned and ready for the next phase! I hope that you will continue to allow me to frequent the YMC pages and participate in Twitterparties! I’ve enjoyed my time as a Yummy Mummy Club Member and like my time with my granddaughter, I don’t want it to end!

Yours in childrearing...
