What Makes a Dad Delicious

Is it aviator sunglasses, à la David Beckham? Foppish hair à la Rob Pattinson? How about George Clooney's wit? Or Salman Rushdie's mind? A six-pack -- and I'm not talking Molson -- or how nicely he fills his Calvins?

Delicious Dad...isn't that an oxymoron? If you asked me this question a few years ago, I'd have said any of the above. (Well, except for Rob Pattinson, because he would have been prepubescent and that, my friends, is just plain illegal.) Or I might have given you a blank look.

In truth, dads weren't really on my radar until, that is, my husband Mr. Green became one. Lucky for me, after 10 years of marriage he still ticks many delicious boxes. Hell, the night we met we even talked about the Satanic Verses! But what is truly delicious to me today has less to do with five o'clock shadows and buns of steel, and everything to do with how this DD cares for our son. This goes for other guys, too.

Being a SAHM, I've seen my fair share of SAHDs at parks and playgroups. And I guarantee you, if Bradley Pitt were sitting on a bench playing with his iPhone and not paying a scrap of attention to one of his many offspring, well, I won't lie and say that he'd suddenly be unattractive. But he'd certainly be less attractive... Ok, so maybe Brad Pitt isn't the best example to use, but you get me. Guess who's not getting any Oreo cookie?

By the same token, when Mr Green is snuggling up reading our son a book, or on all fours sending the little Green one into a fit of giggles with his delicious histrionics -- the way I never can -- I get warm fuzzies ALL OVER. Conversely, when I'm busy or our son is being an utter pill (and we all have those days) and all Mr Green wants to do is plunk himself in front of Formula One, then I'll give you one guess who's not getting any Oreo cookie...

It's not that I hold him to some weird sexual ransom. Just that when I see a dad really engage with his son or daughter, when they are having one of those priceless daddy moments, that's when I know I've come face to face with something rare and truly delicious.
