Homemade Barbecue Sauce Recipe

No More Store-Bought After You Try This

It's always great to have a barbecue sauce to slather on chicken in the last few minutes of grilling. I like making my own, and it's so easy! This one is positively addictive. Sweet, tangy, with a little heat, you really can't go wrong. You could also use this as a tomato base on pizzas, dip for chicken fingers, sauce on burgers, and more. Be creative! Add more cayenne if you like things really spicy.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp butter
2 cups onion, diced
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1 clove minced garlic
2/3 cup ketchup
1/4 cup liquid honey
2 tbsp packed brown sugar
2 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Melt 1 tbsp butter in a skillet and sauté onion until softened, about 4 minutes.  Stir in the garlic and vinegar, then continue to cook until almost no liquid remains.

In a small bowl, stir together the ketchup, honey, brown sugar, dry mustard, paprika, and cayenne. Add to the onion mixture and bring to a simmer over medium heat before turning down to low and simmering gently for about 25 minutes until the sauce thickens.

Serve with chicken fingers, or pieces of barbecue chicken.  Brush over nearly cooked pieces in the last 10 to 15 minutes of cooking. The sauce keeps well and can be made about a month ahead. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.
