If a picture is worth a thousand words, then how many words is an entire book of pictures worth, especially when those pictures speak right to a mother’s heart?
JC Little, The Animated Woman, has released her second book, Motherhood, just in time for Mother’s Day.
This story is for mothers at any and every stage of the journey. Motherhood chronicles the intimate connectedness from the time of expecting, then nurturing a newborn, through toddlerhood; from the joy and pride and unending love for the child, to the independent adult child.
It is the universal experience of motherhood, as once defined by Elizabeth Stone:
“It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.”
The first time I experienced this story was as a part of an audience at the BConnected Conference. I felt an immediate emotional connection to the story, and the tear-filled eyes and applause following confirmed that those around me felt it, too.
My kids are now sixteen and thirteen. I never knew this kind of love until I had them, and I also was not prepared to expect the kind of helplessness I feel in the moments I can’t reach them when they’re out in the blistering sun without sunscreen or a hat for hours mid-day, when I know I can’t protect them from the loss of a loved one, or the pain of circumstances beyond my control. And I know my mom went, and still goes through all of the same things.
Because that is what Motherhood is.
It is a bond that brings us all together, regardless of where we come from, what language we speak, or whether or not we can read.
