Kathy Reichs' Flash and Bones

New Temperance Brennan Bones Mystery

Kathy Reichs' Flash and Bones

If you're a fan of bestselling author Kathy Reichs' novels and her Bones television series, then you will be pleased as punch to know the new Bones book Flash and Bones has hit the shelves! This story is set in the world of speedway racing so you know it will be a bumpy ride for Dr. Temperance Brennan!

Twelve years ago a pair of teens disappear with barely a trace. Cindi was a promising racer and her boyfriend Cale was known to have ties to a group of right-wing extremists known as the Patriot Posse. The authorities investigated but they came up with a dead end. Did the pair of lovebirds go into hiding? Was there some sort of cover-up? Flash forward to present day and a partially decomposed body is found in a barrel of asphalt next to the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Could it be Cale's or Cindi's body, or did someone else meet this gruesome fate?

Here are a few questions I had for the Flash and Bones author Kathy Reichs.

Q & A with Kathy Reichs

WLY: What inspired you to have a career as a forensic anthropologist?

KR: Actually, I trained to work as a bio-archaeologist, analyzing ancient remains excavated from archaeological sites.  As the “Bones” doc at the university, police started bringing me cases. I liked the relevance of coroner work, retrained, obtained board certification, and never looked back.

WLY: You wear many hats as a forensic anthropologist, a bestselling author and a producer of the Bones television series. If you had to give up one, how would this effect the other professions?

KR: It would certainly free up some of my time!  But I think the fact that I work in a medico-legal crime lab gives an authenticity to my stories that would otherwise be lacking.  I would not want to give that up.  Or the writing.  Or the Hollywood experience.

WLY: You have a connection to Canada as a member of the National Police Services Advisory Council of Canada and you are a consultant for the Laboratoire de Sciences Judiciaires et de Médecine Légale for the province of Québec. Do you find any differences between your American and Canadian readers?

KR: Not really. My fans everywhere are the reason I produce the books and show.  Their enthusiasm is beyond gratifying.  The Canadians are better at snow and ice removal than the folks back home, I suppose.

WLY: After 14 thrilling Bones mysteries would you ever consider writing a romance?

KR: No. I will leave contemporary women’s literature to my daughter, Kerry Reichs.  (The Best Day of Someone Else’s Life; Leaving Unknown).  Her books are poignant.  And hilarious.

WLY: Did you enjoy speedway racing before writing about the culture or did you become a fan while researching it for Flash and Bones?

KR: Prior to writing Flash and Bones I had attended only one race. But I know many people involved in the sport, and many ardent fans.  I hope they enjoyed bringing me into their world as much as I enjoyed entering it.

The new Temperance Brennan novel, Flash and Bones, was just released in the United States and Canada. The paperback version of Reichs' young adult novel, Virals just arrived in bookstores, and later this Fall, the second book in the Virals series, Seizure, will be released in hardcover.

Book Review: Unto the Breach

Sailing and Suspense For Young Adults

Book Review: Unto the Breach

There's nothing like a good adventure, right? Well, a bit of fun can be a good thing but what happens when a trio of teens plan a sailing trip but end up getting more excitement than they bargained for?

Introducing Unto the Breach written by Sidney Gale, an author who is also a doctor and a sailor. His young adult (YA) novel is being reviewed by a 15-year-old guest blogger.

UNTO THE BREACH by Sidney Gale

reviewed by Tyler W. Y.

The novel Unto the Breach is a tale about three 13-year-old boys and their teacher, who embark on a sailing trip around Lake Ontario. The story begins when Anthony Colluci’s principal, Mr. McTavish, announces that the school would be going on a field trip to a place called “Upward Bound”.  Anthony doesn’t feel he would have fun on the field trip, so he turns to his best friend Eric Roseman, who comes up with the idea to sail around Lake Ontario together instead of following the group on the school field trip. Anthony and Eric decide to ask their teacher, Mr. Benson, if it would be okay for him to go on the sailing trip with them, and he agrees. The two ask their parents for permission to go on the trip with their teacher. Eric’s parents said yes right away, while Anthony’s parents took a lot more convincing. Anthony’s parents eventually agreed to let him go after they found another teen, Rob Steele, to go along on the trip since he had some sailing experience. The teens and the teacher set off to sail around Lake Ontario on a boat called a Shark. They expected to have a sailing adventure but didn’t anticipate the trip to turn out like a scene from a suspense thriller! Here is a quote to show the stress the boys were under:

“He’s blown his pupil,” Anthony said. “What the heck does that mean?” Eric asked, “It means his blood clot’s getting bigger. Things are getting worse.” “So what do we do now?” Eric asked.

I thought Unto the Breach was very entertaining and it kept my interest, even though I know next to nothing about sailing. The characters weren’t dull and boring, which helps the reader get into each character’s head. Each teen brought their own personality to the story. For instance, Rob sails with a rich sailing club, while Eric doesn’t have that privilege. One thing I like about the story is it demonstrates that young people can save lives, if they are brave and keep their wits about them. I won't be telling you any more of the drama or details - no spoilers here - so you will have to pick up the book to find out how the story ends. I would recommend this book for ages 12-16. If you’re into sailing, or like medical dramas, then you’ll love this book!

Philippa Gregory's The Red Queen

Queen of Historical Romance

Philippa Gregory's The Red Queen

If you enjoy historical romances, then the name Philippa Gregory (of The Other Boleyn Girl fame) would be as familiar to you as smelling salts would be to a corseted woman.

The Red Queen, follow up to  The White Queen, is now available in paperback in anticipation of the third book in the Wars of the Roses series, The Lady of the Rivers, to be released this Fall. The Red Queen is just as scintillating and salacious as The White Queen and The Lady of the Rivers promises to bring the same!

Margaret Beaufort was born the heiress to the red rose of Lancaster. Margaret had grand plans for herself but her more practical mother arranges for her to marry a man twice her age. Margaret finds herself in a loveless marriage, a mother at age fourteen and then a young widow. Instead of dwelling on her lonely life, she sets her sights on the throne of England for her son. The Red Queen is a tantalizing tale of loyalty, lineage, royalty and destiny.

For more from The Red Queen read the excerpt from Simon & Schuster Canada and visit Philippa Gregory's website: www.philippagregory.com.
