Giving Is Yummy

"We Day"—Get Caught in the Wave of Giving

I must say that this time of year always reminds me that yes, it is really  great to receive a gift from someone or a  prize from the Yummy Mummy Club, but it is also important that we remember to open our hearts and give to those who need our help.

My daughter Lauren and I recently attended “We Day,” the youth empowerment event that is the kick off for Free The Children’s fund-raising year. Free the Children is an international children’s charity co-founded by two brothers, Craig and Marc Keilburger. With 18,000 students in attendance and an incredible line-up of motivational speakers and performers, Lauren and I spent the day being carried by the wave of inspiration to do even more in our lives to help those in need.

Since that day, I have seen my daughter become more aware of the difference that she can make in this world.  Lauren now volunteers for the Community Association for Riding for the Disabled (C.A.R.D).  This organization provides therapeutic horse backing riding programs for children and adults with disabilities. For me, well,  aside from contributing to my usual charities and other volunteer activities, for the first time I headed downtown and participated  in, “ Light the Night,” a walk to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

When I hear back from our winners, they most often comment that “I never win anything” and my personal fave, “You’ve made my day Prize Queen.” Wow! It is comments like these that make me love my job. Giving no matter how you do it, feels good. So I guess this is my plug to remind us all to do what we can to make a difference.
