Travel Vermont: The Best Way to Ease Into Spring

Spring is always my favourite time for skiing and one the best place to go is Vermont. First of all, because they have amazing ski hills but also they have great food, not to mention fabulous spas and activities for the entire family.

For a few years now, it has become a ritual for my family to go Vermont in March.  We have tried the amazing resort at Jay Peak a few times, where we can ski, splash and stay for an amazing rate value, and we have spent three of the most wonderful ski days in Smugglers Notch, where they also have great accommodation and perfect indoor activities for children, including games and swimming pools.

What to Do

This year, we went a little further, as I was invited to discover Killington and the Mountain Top Inn and Resort. The resort is about 30 minutes form the Killington and Pico ski hills but what a treat. It has a variety of winter activities including snowshoeing, cross country skiing, tubing, sleigh riding and even yoga classes, and a spa - yummy mummies need treats too! It is really nice to just relax and enjoy a vacation in a quiet and picturesque countryside environment. Plus, if you want a downhill ski day, a free shuttle goes to the Killington ski resort on a daily basis, leaving at 8:30, returning at 4pm. You can get your ski tickets right at the front desk – I suggest you do because for some reason, they are slightly cheaper. (Photo credit: Panorama and Mountain Top Inn ©GaryHallPhotography)

Vermont is renowned as a great food region: amazing cheese, ice cream, maple products and even local beer now. A lot of restaurants are part of the localvore trend, so the food is fresh, locally sourced and the service always so friendly in Vermont, it makes the experience even more enjoyable. Not to mention the wine, mostly great American wine, and at a great price.

And since this year was especially a great season for snow, Spring skiing is at its best this year in Vermont.

Where to Eat

If you are in Stowe, you absolutely have to try The Trapp Family Lodge Restaurant. Yes, the Trapp Family as in the family who inspired the award winning movie The Sound of Music. In a family-style setting with superb mountain views, the lodge’s restaurant offers an Austrian inspired menu, including grass beef burgers, European style sausages, schnitzel, chicken liver pate and one of the favourite, homemade pretzels and cheese sauce. Most of the meat is farmed raised on the property, which even has its own brewery! The Trapp brew maker works according to Austrian brewing techniques and they now features five very smooth beers, blond, amber, pilsner, dark and seasonal. They even have their own Pinot blanc, bottled especially for them in Burgenland, Austria.

The owner, very friendly Sam Von Trapp gave us a tour of their new state of the art Brewery, to be open shortly.
