Teen Wins Texting Competition

Texting Champion of the World

Every parent dreams that their child will have a gift, a particular talent that will allow them to shine among the herd. Spare a thought for Austin Wierschke's parents, then.

The 16-year-old Wisconsin teen happens to be a superstar at... texting. He was recently crowned winner of LG United States National Texting Championship in New York. And the prize: USD$50,000 wasn't too shabby, either.

The LG Mobile contest tested finalists to text various phrases as quickly and accurately as possible, through various levels. Semi-final challenges included texting in the dark.

Like other --ahem-- athletes, texting competitors risk of injury in their chosen sport. Athlete's thumb, anyone?

“I’m so excited, I can’t believe I actually won,” said Mr. Wierschke who will go on to the LG Mobile World Cup. (Yes, there is such a thing as that, too.)

Do you think texting qualifies as a talent, let alone a sport? Would you take pride in your child's dexterous thumbs or push him/her to get involved in another activity?
