The loose cords of the lamps pose a strangulation hazard, and led to the death of a 16-month-old child who became entangled in the cord whilst in a crib. A similar incident happened to a 15 month old, also in Europe, yet did not prove fatal.

Though there have been no incidents reported in Canada, customers are advised to immediate remove the lamps and return them to any IKEA store in Canada, or call IKEA for a free repair kit.

For further information, customers may contact IKEA toll-free at 1-800-661-9807 or via the company's website.

From July 1999 to May 2013, approximately 1,100,000 of the lamps have been sold at IKEA in Canada, and around 2,900,000 in the United States.
