Top Ten Tips For Apple Picking With Kids

Fall is on its way and that means it's apple-picking season!

So grab your family and your camera then read these helpful top ten tips for apple picking with kids to guarantee the makings of a fun family tradition!

Call Ahead.

Call the orchard before heading out to be sure they have the kinds of apples you are interested in picking.

Check The Weather.

Canadian autumn can offer anything from rain or snow or record breaking heat waves. Be sure to dress everyone appropriately, consider if you need sunscreen or bug spray and if it's rained in your area even a little bit over the last few days definitely wear rain boots!

Ditch the Strollers And The Wagons

Apple orchards are not always stroller- or wagon-friendly. Encourage kids to walk and consider a baby carrier for the not-yet-walking ones.

Park As Close As You Possibly Can.

Apples are heavy and so are overtired toddlers and you definitely don't want to end up carrying both too far.

Most orchards sell apples by the weight so be sure to have a conversation with the kids about how many apples you plan on picking, which kinds and in which condition BEFORE you head out to the orchard.

Eye To The Sky.

There is a trick to turning the apple upside down before picking it so that you don't damage the tree. Be sure to ask an orchard staff member the proper way to pick before you let your kids loose at the trees.

Bring Money.

Most orchards offer special activities during prime apple picking season, especially on the weekends. Often, these activities are free but bring a bit of money just in case for hay rides, apple cider, bouncy castles, corn mazes, scarecrow building and other fun activities.

Bring The Camera.

Apple picking makes for some amazing photo opportunities. Say Apple!

Go To The Bathroom BEFORE You Leave The House.

Unless you're a risk taker or actually like using portable toilets.
