Comparison Shopping: From Luxury To Affordable

If shaking your money tree isn't working, here are some alternatives...

I love fall (but not as much as summer) because it means I can shop, guilt-free, for the things I need. Of course, with every new season, I feel like I have NOTHING to wear until I take full stock of the things that are already hanging (some, still with tags attached) in my closet. A few days ago, I did the seasonal closet re-organization and discovered that in fact, I'm doing okay in the clothes department, and don't actually need to buy anything new right now, except for a few pairs of boots, some sweaters, a dress or two, a new purse...and oh...there I go again!

I put my things in a few piles, after I kissed my summer shoes and little dresse good-bye. A closet re-org is something you should do, too, with each change of season. That way, you'll know what you need, and what you don't need.

I made my usual piles of:

Keep

Toss

Give away

Can't-quite-part-with-yet-even-though-I-I'll-never-wear-again

Although there is not much I actually need, there are always items I want to buy, just because. And I thought I'd do some comparison shopping, so that when I get the urge to spend more than I should, I'll know that I can find almost the exact same thing for far less money. Which means, that's right, more money in my pocket to shop some more. Win-win, you guys.

Ready to comparison shop? Here we go!

A new watch: I love watches but don't own more than five, because really, how many does one person need, after all? I'm a huge fan of Michael Kors watches because they're stunning, come in many different styles, and are completely affordable. Sure, Burberry makes some gorgeous watches too, but rather than spend $495 on the silver Burberry watch, why not buy the equally lovely $225 Michael Kors watch, on the right? (My mom recently bought me this silver watch for my birthday—thanks Mom!)

A must-have item in every woman's closet is the classic trench coat. I have always been a fan of the ones from Banana Republic. I also love the classic trench coats from Burberry but $2000 for a coat that I'm very likely to spill coffee on is not worth it for me. I'm sticking with my $240 Banana trench, seen, on the right.

Of course, owning a sexy pair of nude heels is an absolute must. Believe me when I tell you, you can wear a gorgeous pair of nude heels with everything, any season. I have a really nice pair of nude platform heels, but I've worn them so much I will soon need another pair! I fell in love with—like head-over-heels in love with - this sexy pair of Christian Louboutins... of course, they were over $800 and so buying them is just a dream. Seriously, I'd rather hop on a plane and spend the day in Paris for that money! However, so many stores have very nice nude heels, like this pair on the right, from Aldo. And at only $80, you could even buy two pairs!

What else do I covet? Oh, you know, just the ultimate pair of sexy booties, also by Christian Louboutin. Again, these are way out of my price range, (at almost $1000) even though if you give you me five minutes I could write a speech about why I should own them and clearly justify to you why spending that money on a pair of boots makes decent sense. However, I'm okay with the equally sexy pair of boots from Aldo, for only 80 sexy dollars.

These are just some of the items I'm currently shopping for. It's nice to know that there is always an alternative to the luxury items I love. Sure, some things will always be worth spending a lot of money on, like designer sunglasses and purses, and designer shoes during the great shoe sales at department stores like Holt Renfrew, but the rest of the time? You don't have to break the bank when you're hitting the mall!

It's about shopping for what you need, splurging a bit when you can, and being (somewhat) sensible the rest of the time.

Happy shopping!
