Chinese New Year Food and Family Fun

Serve Up A Side of Symbolism With Your Szechuan

Bang a gong, dinner’s on!!

I know I used that line before. Only last year in fact, when we were filming this video about Chinese New Year. That doesn't matter though. Know what matters? Plum sauce. THAT’S what matters. And chicken balls. They matter too (just ask a chicken).

So, are you ready to ring in the Year of the Dragon? So what if you're not Chinese? It’s an excuse to eat Chinese food – hello, Kung Hei Fat Yum!!

And what a great way to turn an ordinary Friday (yes, Chinese New Year falls on Friday, January 31st this year) into a celebration! You can check out my tips here on how to EASILY pull together a festive Chinese New Year dinner party for your family.

Whether you make shrimp fried rice, veggie low mein and chicken satays, or order in (I vote for THAT option), here are some fun food facts to share with your kids while you man those chopsticks.

The Symbolism of Chinese New Year Foods:

Bamboo Shoots = wealth (Must be true. Ever met a poor panda?)

Chicken = happiness and marriage (True. Unless you’re hen pecked.)

Eggs = fertility (Obviously.)

Egg Rolls = wealth (egg rolls, bank rolls...eerily similar)

Lychee Nuts = close family ties (True dat. I’m rather close to the nuts in my family.)

Noodles = a long life (No matter what he tells you, noodle length DOES matter.)

Oranges = wealth (Orange ya glad you didn’t buy grapefruits?)

Peanuts = a long life (Unless you’re allergic.)

Pomelo = abundance, prosperity, having children (You know what they say about men with a good pair of pomelos....)

Happy Chinese New Year!
