Making Your Artsy Little Guys Happy on March Break

It doesn't take much and doesn't have to break the bank

Living in major cities (or near them) helps when we're planning our March break activites. From city run day-events to music lesons and concerts, there's all sorts of stuff to keep our kids happy. This weekend, Toronto hosted one of many comic book conventions, Comic Con, run by the same team that does Fan Expo and as always, kids are free!

Lainey Gossip's Excellent TEDx Talk

On why gossip is good...and why we shouldn't be ashamed to love it

So, clearly, I love celebrity gossip. If I didn't, I wouldn't be writing all these posts, engaging with you guys. And I follow all sorts of other bloggers. From Michael K to Lainey Gossip. I also am a big fan of TEDx talks, and last month, as part of their move to Vancouver, TEDx invited Elaine Lui (of Lainey Gossip) to give a talk. I know what you are thinking — what kind of talk can a celebrity blogger give at a huge socio-scientific conference?

The Amazing Race is Coming to Canada

And the auditions are Yummy!

As you may have heard, CTV is producing an all-Canadian version of The Amazing Race airing this summer and are looking for submissions. Enter Amy and Kris—mums and teachers from Toronto. These two are funny, witty and are hoping to show Canada that "life doesn't end after pushing out a placenta!"

Jennifer Lawrence was this year's winner for Best Actress at the Oscars, and whether you loved or hated her performance (or the movie), you have to admit that her happiness is contagious. Though many of us probably know her from her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, this wasn't J-Law's first nomination with the Academy.

2013 Oscar Wrap Up

Boring, long, and a disappointing host

This year's Oscars telecast clocked in at nearly 4 hours long. An insanely boring, useless 4 hours. I wasn't expecting to like Seth MacFarlane as host, but he was BAD. Bad as in how-does-he-not-know-how-awful-this-is bad. His false laugh between jokes. His snappy fingers. Bob Hope you ain't, buddy. There were so many sexist, racist, and homophobic remarks followed by his weasly little smile and twinkle that I couldn't stop rolling my eyes. And having ANOTHER song after the Best Picture award? Holy moly, man.

2013 Oscar Predictions

Maybe after this, I can claim to be clairvoyant?

So, as you're all aware, The Academy Awards are airing this Sunday and YMC will be along for the ride! I'll be firing up my fondue pot and using the hashtag #YMCOscars (@kitten_arms) all night starting at around 6pm EST for all the Red Carpet hijinks and then on with the show! But who will win?

The Ferret Squad Concept Trailer

Canadian Director Allison Parker Takes A Different Road To Film Funding

Filmmaking, like most of the arts these days, is not for the weak of heart, and is a very difficult business even for those "in the know." Filmmakers often have to struggle to get things made, as it seems that big studios want to take less and less chances, fearing that their bottom line might suffer. Sometimes, directors have to take things into their own hands, much like Canadian director Allison Parker.

Beyonce at the Super Bowl: Sexy, Smart, Powerful

And her half-time show proved that you can be sexy, smart AND powerful

After I saw a comment on a mum's group early on Monday claiming that Beyonce could not be a "feminist" by wearing a sexually charged outfit (I'm paraphrasing), and that women who wear sexy clothes can't be considered feminists because they look "skanky," I took to Twitter to express my frustration. It frustrates me to no end that in 2013, we still need to explain to women as well as men that regardless of what a woman chooses to wear, she is not trampy nor asking for it.

Real Housewife of Vancouver Ronnie Negus Comes Clean

Proof that regardless of what you have, motherhood is universal

Now that we saw that football game in the middle of the Beyonce concert, television has much more to offer. Case in point? Season two of The Real Housewives of Vancouver begins this Tuesday, February 5 on Slice Canada. The cast has three new housewives and three returning. One of the housewives that got tongues wagging most in season one was Ronnie Negus—she of the white wine (as portrayed by the producers).

Friday Date Night: Cineplex Digital Film Fest

A different kind of night at the movies

With Valentine's day coming up, I suspect there are a lot of mums and dads out there scrambling to try and find a sitter, reservations and all the other stuff. But why not do something a little different—maybe go for dinner and a movie before V-Day and avoid all the cheesy, expensive crap? I have always thought that a pre or post V-Day was the way to go if you really wanted to get out on the town because I don't particularly find overcrowded, overanxious, and overpriced to be all that romantic.

Tidbits From All Over Celebdom

Celebrity doesn't stop just because I did

For those of you who follow me on Twitter, you know that the Armstrong family has been on lockdown for oh, five days. Probable Norwalk virus, me almost being admitted to hospital due to Norwalk and pregnancy. You know, usual stuff (aka the worst). But, the show has gone on without me and so much has happened. I want to catch you up on a few things that you may have missed and one that you really shouldn't this week. Everything from the SAG Awards, to Chris Brown at it again.

Lance Armstrong: The Aftermath of Oprah

Reactions, trending, opinions and the truth about Livestrong

Last week, Oprah sat down for a two-part interview with disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong on her OWN channel. The interview was at times both painful to watch (Lance seemed really to be trying hard to come across as honest which made him seem to be even bigger of a liar), and strange (Oprah, at times seemed to fawn over Armstrong). But what has come about since the interview? Mostly hurt and anger. The interview was the most watched TV in Canada—over 2.5 million viewers—and had everyone on Twitter talking. This was the thing we were talking about last week.

Earlier this week, Disney Interactive invited bloggers and writers from around the world to participate in a news conference to present their newest gaming platform. This is something that Disney's been working on for a long time and you can tell they are deeply invested in just by the excitement exhibited by the day's three presenters: Disney Interactive Co-President John Pleasants, Academy Award winning Director and head of the Disney-Pixar Animation Studios John Lasseter and the VP and GM of Avalanche Software, John Blackburn.

Golden Globes 2013 Wrap-Up

A few surprises, and a lot to talk about!

WOW! Just finished watching the 2013 Golden Globes and there's so much to talk about that I'm not entirely sure where to begin, so let's start with the clothes. There were some amazing looks, some OK looks and some mehs, but I'm calling this year's show the Year of the Red Dress. And not just any red dresses—there was a boatload of bright bright red. My personal favourites of the night were a tie. In Dior: Jennifer Lawrence, Best Actress, Comedy or Musical winner for Silver Linings Playbook and presenter Lucy Lui in Carolina Herrera.

Oscar 2013 Nominations

There are a few snubs on this list

Just in time for the Golden Globes this Sunday (follow us on Twitter with #YMCGlobes!), the 2013 Oscar nominations were announced this morning. Can I just say, wow? Or what the? Or how about: are you freaking kidding me? Leo and Tarantino were mostly snubbed. As were Kathryn Bigelow and Ben Affleck. Sometimes, the awards get nominees so right. 90% of the time, they're so wrong (this year's an in-between).

The Golden Globes air this Sunday live from Hollywood, and they the perfect kickoff to the awards season. This year's hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are sure to liven the place up (although, I for one, found Ricky Gervais to be a great host). I'm not sure I recall there being two women hosting anything like this before, so that, in and of itself is banner, but the fact that it's Poehler and Fey? Icing on an already awesome cake.

Oprah's Million Dollar Neighbourhood Comes to Bowmanville

A conversation with the show's financial expert, Preet Banerjee

As we all (sadly) remember, Oprah Winfrey left her daytime talk show in 2011 to pursue her own television network OWN. This cable channel is available here in Canada, and has some very interesting original programming including Million Dollar Neighbourhood. In this series, a smaller town is chosen to decrease debt and increase the collective wealth of the participants to $1 million dollars in 10 weeks through a series of challenges set out by the show's host and financial expert. The show premiered this past Sunday, January 6 and will air weekly for the next 10 weeks.

Friday Date Night: Django Unchained

Really REALLY glad we got a sitter for this one

Between my hubby's crazy job situation, my impossibly busy schedule and all the rest, Matt and I haven't gotten out to see a movie since AUGUST. I'm ashamed, dear readers. But, Matt had the night off tonight, so we made it a mission to go to the movies (especially because between my Scene Card and my brother's Christmas gift to us, it was super worth while).
