Happy Anniversary, Celebritease!

One year has flown by for me, how about you?

One year ago, on May 17th, Celebritease was introduced to you, the wonderful YMC community. I didn't know what to expect when I came on board besides having fun writing about stuff I like and sharing interesting news and tidbits with you. In the last year, my wonderful husband changed jobs, I got pregnant, and my hair changed about 15 times. I also learned a lot, interacted with wonderful parents and have made new friends through this blog. Oh, and I got to meet and speak to some pretty cool people. So I wanted to take this opportunity to spend a minute talking about all my favourite (and some of the more difficult) moments on Celebritease as we gear up for the year ahead, the impending birth of my new bambino and where we might go in the next 12 months.

The Best

My favourite posts this year centred around women's issues. Weight in particular. I think all women are beautiful. Every shape and size. What I don't find very beautiful is the way that bigger women are made to feel for being bigger and how smaller women are made to feel just because they may not have "curves." My husband once said that he believed the allure of women was that we do come in every size whereas men are only "three" (s,m,l). And I know men come in all shapes and sizes too, but I understand what my husband was trying to say.

Other posts I loved included my interview with Drea de Matteo, meeting two of the creators of Night of the Living Dead and some of the contests I've run on my blog (you still have until the end of May to enter the latest one with Hollywood Suite and a $600 makeover!)

The Not-So-Best

Recently, I posted about Jessica Alba. I was enraged and I wasn't clear about why I was bothered by her coming clean about her weight loss regimen after having her second child. We received a press release from a corseting company targeting mothers asking us to promote their "weight loss corsets" just like Alba wore! It shook me down to my last nerve. Why? Because while yes, I understand that Hollywood is a machine and that actresses are paid to look great and be thin, I don't think it's very respectful of women to try to continue to push this ideal on us. Some women are naturally thin. Some women are not. Some women fall into the middle, and then there are all the women in between. I wish we could just accept that and move on, and that actresses and other celebrities would just admit that their jobs involve being this false ideal of beauty so that many women and especially young girls can stop hurting themselves to try and be this ideal.

Nobody's perfect, and that's really how I like things. There were a lot of comments on this post, many negative and I understand that it was definitely because of the tone of the post. So I apologize. My goal with that post, as with all my others is not to belittle other women, especially not mothers. I was angry about our society, about how women are told to look, feel and behave and I was angry that mothers have a new thing to feel bad about — our post-baby bodies.

Celebdom exists in a vacuum and it makes money by selling us stuff. It is always way easier to sell stuff to people who have self esteem or other issues with themselves than those who are happy with themselves. I understand that. But I hope to keep exposing these falshoods to remind us all (and to help us remind our kids) that these ideals aren't real. And that everyone has something beautiful to share.

So now, I want to hear from you. What have been some of your favourite posts on Celebritease this year? Even some of your least favourites! What would you like to see me cover more of, or less of than I'm covering right now?

And I really want to thank you all for making this first year with YMC amazing.
