When I travel for work, it’s a bit of an ordeal for my family. I am not in one of those perfectly even co-parenting situations where I can walk out the door completely confident that Daddy-o will get children to correct activities or that pre-school snacks will be packed.
You know how annoying it is when you go to the mall and someone is in that spot and they don’t have a kid? Well, I feel that frustration when I see someone in that spot and they only have two kids. I feel even more irritated when I see a car in that spot and there are two adults present! When I take my six kids to the mall to get their back-to-school shoes, I would really appreciate it if you could leave that spot for me. Kay? Thanks.
A few years ago, my family went on holiday with a group of friends and their small children. One of the other mamas was watching my kids play and made an interesting comment – she observed that my kids were playing in the same way she used to play with her five siblings: together. My friend noted that she can tell the kids who come from a big family because they always play together and hardly take notice of the kids around them.
I recently received a press release asking for my comment on some of the latest research dealing with how parents are disciplining their children. The study contained information on spanking as a discipline method. Initially, a voice in my head shouted:
“ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ARE WE SERIOUSLY STILL THROWING RESEARCH MONEY AT THIS TOPIC? SURELY EVERYONE HAS FIGURED OUT THAT BASHING YOUR KID AROUND IN THE NAME OF ‘DISCIPLINE’ DOESN’T WORK?!!”
Then I told my little voice to try to hush for a moment while I had a peek at the information.
